Our Team:

The with the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management in the SC Johnson College of Business, supports farm families and agricultural businesses by providing financial and family/personal consulting to improve the farm business and family communications. The New York FarmNet Program offers free, confidential, impartial consulting to farmers and agribusiness professionals across the State of New York. Consultations take place on site, most often in the client's home. Consultants (50 total) work in teams of two, one addressing financial issues and one addressing family/personal issues. NY FarmNet also offers educational programming within agricultural communities related to succession planning and stress management. The program was founded in 1986 in response to the national farm crisis.

This Position:

The NY FarmNet Office Administrator will manage and be responsible for business and administrative operations for NY FarmNet. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Developing annual program budgets encompassing multiple and varying funding sources; providing specific guidance to team members related to timelines, remaining funds, and required action.
  • Managing grant administration within the unit to ensure spending compliance and efficiency; exercising management and control over expenditures and variances; creating and submitting technical and progress reports to sponsors.
  • Making regular financial projections relative to program plans and initiatives and fluctuating circumstances at the University and sponsor levels.
  • Identifying areas for improved efficiency within the program budget and operations; tracking accounts and investigating discrepancies; applying appropriate account distribution on financial documents; reviewing statements for accuracy.
  • Acting as main point of contact with the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Sponsored Research, and Sponsored Financial Services; collaborating with these offices to finalize and submit budgets and scopes of work; replying to various requests from sponsors directly and via these offices.
  • Working closely with the JCB finance team, Shared Services Center, and sponsors to ensure compliance with all relevant policies, participating in monthly meetings with JCB finance representative.
  • Overseeing NY FarmNet's database and ensuring it is utilized in such a way as to provide data collection in a manner and form useful to NY FarmNet staff and consultants.
  • Acting as the liaison for the maintenance, repair, and inventory of equipment and facilities.

** This is a fixed term, one-year benefits eligible position with the possibility of renewal.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
  • Associate degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Proficient use of technology (e.g., web research, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work and educational program delivery, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications, and overall management.
  • Comfortable working with minimal day to day oversight and self-motivated to stay on task and prioritize needs.
  • Ability to travel to local and surrounding communities, and occasional statewide travel and overnight stays are required as a regular part of this position.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural, and economic diversity of the agricultural community in NYS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple financial accounts including reconciling, reporting, budgeting, and auditing.
  • Experience with grant writing, fund and project management, and grant project reporting practices.
  • Experience in general HR policies and procedures, employee recruitment, job postings, and interviewing
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time and under deadline.
  • Understanding of and experience in managing data bases including assessing effectiveness, troubleshooting problems, and developing best practices.
  • Awareness and understanding of agriculture and farm family issues.
