Position Description

Responsible for operating machine tools such as mill and lathe to produce precision metal parts. Assembles, repairs, and fabricates parts into sub-units or complete units. Uses blueprints, design sketches, and CNC coding to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Advise and consult with faculty and research personnel regarding machining needs, as well as identify the type of device or equipment needed to accomplish research goal; design to accomplish desired result.
  • Design and fabricate parts for tools, maintenance, lab equipment, and a variety of other apparatus requiring skilled machining; utilize precision measuring instruments to acquire close tolerance cuts and shapes. Draws plans, measurements and specifications; constructs and tests devices/equipment/instruments for effectiveness.
  • Operate and program a large variety of machining equipment and tools including lathe, drill press, 3 axis and 5 axis CNC milling machines, as well as all typical accessories and machine shop support equipment; work with various metals, plastics, glass or ceramics to construct equipment or instrumentation per client request. Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation. Perform 3D modeling and CNC programming of mill and lathe with Autodesk Fusion360 and/or MasterCAM and SolidWorks.
  • Repair machine parts or castings; build up shafts, gears or other machine parts to desired dimensions or shape; perform heating, cutting or burning operations. Overhaul pumps and motor bearing replacements.
  • Organize and perform preventative and daily maintenance on tools and machines including lubrication, cleaning and replacement of parts, sharpen cutting tools; clean work areas. Clean, maintain, safely operate and properly store all tools and equipment.
  • May perform or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports and maintenance records.
  • Maintain and update machine documentation, including maintenance logs, repair records, and equipment manuals.
  • Willingness to stay updated with the latest advancements and technologies in CNC and Additive Manufacturing technology.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Completion of high school or the equivalent. Four to six years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.*
  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
