Salary Range:$165,000 - $375,000

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $165,00-$375,000plus bonus eligibility and other elements of our total rewards package. The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role. Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.In addition to base pay, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

We are seeking a capable and driven Infrastructure Engineer to support and scale our IT infrastructure with a focus on hybrid cloud, hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies. This role will focus on building and supporting next-generation, cost-effective, and vendor-neutral infrastructure solutions. Ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with modern infrastructure solutions and the ability to collaborate across teams to ensure high availability, performance, and security of systems.

You will be responsible for maintaining and evolving infrastructure environments on-premises, cloud and at edge, and collaborating with network and security specialists to abstract infrastructure into scalable, reusable platforms.

As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will

  • Design, deploy, and maintain secure infrastructure environments, including servers, virtualization platforms, and cloud resources (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Support networking components including switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless access points
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring high availability and disaster recovery readiness
  • Automate infrastructure management tasks using IaC tools like Terraform, Ansible, Crossplane, or PowerShell
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure-related incidents and provide root cause analysis
  • Manage configuration changes across multiple environments and automate system updates, patching
  • Maintain accurate infrastructure documentation, topology maps, and runbooks
  • Contribute to infrastructure security best practices including access control, logging, and vulnerability remediation
  • Collaborate with DevOps and application teams to support CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineers to abstract infrastructure for consumption by application teams, building reusable infrastructure layers, internal developer platforms (IDPs), and automation frameworks

Basic Qualifications

  • I am CURRENTLY authorized to work in the US.
  • Experienced in infrastructure engineering, system administration, or network operations
  • Experience building and operating Proxmox, KVM, Ceph, GlusterFS, Harvester or OpenStack for HCI
  • Experience implementing or supporting SDN environments (e.g., NSX, Cisco ACI, or SD-WAN)
  • Strong foundation in networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, DNS, DHCP, firewalls)
  • Solid knowledge of Linux and Windows Server environments
  • Experience with kubernetes and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, Python, Go)
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex system and network issues across hybrid environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Rail, Shipping, Airline, Logistics, Warehousing, Supply Chain, or other Transportation industries
  • Experience building with open-source libraries and frameworks.
  • Fluent with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible)
  • Experience with CI/CD systems (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
  • Certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, RHCSA, or CompTIA Security+, certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust networking and secure-by-design infrastructure
