A Med-Surg Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in a medical-surgical unit plays a multifunctional role, focusing on providing basic nursing care to patients with various medical conditions and those recovering from surgery. On a regular basis, they monitor vital signs, administer medications, and perform wound care. LPNs collaborate with registered nurses and doctors, reporting any changes in patients' conditions. They assist with daily living activities, educate patients and families on post-discharge care, and ensure proper documentation in medical records. Their work is essential for maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care in this dynamic unit.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to):

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective medical-surgical nursing interventions.
  • Regularly monitor and record patients' vital signs and other assessments, promptly reporting any changes or concerns to the registered nurse or physician.
  • Administer medications and treatments accurately, maintaining strict compliance with healthcare regulations and institutional policies.
  • Work collaboratively with RNs, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver a comprehensive care plan tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Educate patients and their families on treatment plans, medical procedures, and postoperative care strategies, enhancing their understanding and involvement in care.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate documentation of all nursing care activities, patient interactions, and observations in the medical record.
  • Assisting in managing the work-flow of the med-surg floor, including prioritizing tasks and responding promptly to crises or urgent situations.
  • Uphold infection control policies and procedures, actively contributing to a safe and effective healthcare environment.

Qualifications

Before we go any further, we do have some deal-breakers. You must have:

1. Current and valid state license.

2. Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.

3. IV certification upon hire (state specific).
