The opportunity

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel working as part of the Office of General Counsel and Compliance ("OGCC") team, the Associate General Counsel is a senior level position within the OGCC's legal professional career progression. The Associate General Counsel will help provide general legal services on behalf of the University to all the University's constituencies, including the Board of Trustees, senior administrators, faculty and staff. Primary responsibilities will include providing advice and counsel regarding a broad range of legal matters involving SNHU faculty, staff, and students. You will be a generalist attorney, but areas of focus include serving as the designated counsel for the university's large marketing department, providing legal advice regarding international programs, and providing legal advice and oversight regarding the university's intellectual property and trademark portfolios.

You will have assigned responsibilities in a diverse range of additional practice areas common to higher education institutions, such as disputes and demands, academics and accreditation, litigation strategy and oversight, governance, procurement, student records, civil rights, research, risk management, real estate, finance, administrative law, threat assessment, student health and safety, hearings and procedure development, information technology, legislative matters, affiliate entities, and other areas as assigned.

The OGCC includes both attorneys and compliance professionals. You can work remotely, hybrid, or in the office in this position. #LI-Remote

What you'll do:

  • Advise University leadership on compliance with state and federal laws across diverse fields.
  • Be designated counsel to University's Marketing team. This includes Reviewing and provide a risk assessment on major marketing claims, advertising , social media, promotional materials, and related substantiation.
  • Serve as designated counsel to support University's international operations and programs offered directly by the University or through third parties.
  • Oversee University's intellectual property portfolio, including strategic engagement of outside IP counsel.
  • Provide legal support, research and special projects in the full array of areas handled by the OGCC, such as academic and student affairs, sponsored research, international programs, governance, policies, human resources, purchasing, real estate, construction, intellectual property, and litigation matters.
  • Prepare documentation necessary to implement program initiatives, such as student waivers and releases, permissions and agreements for student contests.
  • Conduct special projects as assigned by the General Counsel.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis and draft legal memoranda, correspondence, policies and reports on behalf of the OGCC.
  • Keep current on developments in law and regulation at the federal, state and local level about higher education institutions.
  • Prepare documentation necessary to implement program programs and achieve our goals related to legal or compliance efforts, working with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Gather and manage discovery materials and processes for outside counsel in litigation matters.
  • Represent the OGCC at specified administrative meetings or hearings.
  • Serve on University committees to provide legal input on committee work.
  • Assist as a legal representative in risk management and compliance activities.
  • May deliver appropriate training to University community members.

What we're looking for:

  • Minimum seven Years Practice of Law with preference for demonstrated interest in, internship or experience directly in or related to non-profit higher education
  • Degree(s): Law Degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Admission to practice before appropriate state and federal courts may be required
  • Member of the New Hampshire Bar Association required or eligible for admission and admitted within one year of employment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of contacts, including Executive and Senior Management and the Board of Trustees
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of intact and cross-functional teams and governance structures.

Compensation

The annual pay range for this position is $147,196.00 - $235,558.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations. We expect this position to be hired in the following target hiring range $162,652.00 - $220,059.00.
