Position Summary:

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Ammo, Projectile will use their engineering talent to design, develop, effectively implement, and constantly improve production processes to manufacture elite, world class ammunition for the consumer, law enforcement, and military markets. This role will focus on, but not limited to, rifle and pistol projectile manufacturing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Identify safety improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
  • In coordination with Quality Engineering, establish, update, and maintain control plans for in process steps of ammo manufacture including the design and build of gages to verify product quality and master verification of inspection systems.
  • Provide expert consultation and leadership while working with Operations personnel to identify root causes and resolution of issues affecting daily operating equipment efficiency (OEE).
  • Analyze performance data to identify continuous improvement opportunities. Utilize lean or Six Sigma principles to implement efficiency improvements and maintain the gains.
  • Generate annual cost savings plan for areas of responsibility via formal cost savings analysis using established procedures.
  • Exert leadership and responsibility for achieving the cost, productivity, and quality goals for assigned area of production while working with cross functional teams to achieve goals.
  • Design, develop, and modify tooling, tooling assemblies and automation to improve tool life, product quality, equipment efficiency, and to support NPI through use of SOLIDWORKS and Agile software.
  • Work with Quality Assurance to improve process control using statistical methods to maintain low or zero defects on the line. Develop and control trouble shooting methodologies and data.
  • Develop and implement processes, and production line layouts to support a lean production environment including Kanban replenishment methodologies especially concerning tooling consumption.
  • Provide budgetary estimates for equipment, tools, gages, and production rates as required.
  • Work with R&D engineers to provide expertise and ensure a seamless transition of advance or break-through new products in development to full industrialization including procurement of tooling and equipment for new products to meet launch timelines and cost targets.
  • Work collaboratively with the in-house automation team to receive, start-up, and assimilate newly built production equipment and meet key performance indicators. This includes debug and runoffs per SIG SAUER machine specification requirements.
  • Provide Engineering support for multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Generate new machine specifications and negotiate requirements with vendors.
  • Review 3D models and prints for accuracy and manufacturability while applying GD&T and performing dimensional tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Collaboratively create work instructions for the production processes. Effectively implement work instructions through training, communication, videos, or other techniques.
  • Provide consultation on problem solving teams across multiple products and processes and complete assigned tasks and projects per agreed upon timelines.
  • Maintain research, activity documentation, and prepare reports.
  • Perform as a technical leader, a resource for co-workers, and as a mentor to less senior Engineers.
  • Participate in 5s workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities, including requests for maintenance when needed for both personal space and multi-use department spaces.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Education/Experience & Skills:



  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 7-10 years previous work experience.
  • Expertise in technical support of transfer presses as used in the assembly and manufacture of projectiles for cartridges below .50 BMG.
  • Working knowledge of ballistics factors of a projectile that affect ammunition precision and dispersion.
  • Experience with cold heading of bullet jackets is desired.
  • Experience with Trace ammunition or projectiles is desired.
  • Practical, hands-on experience with equipment, machining, and/or fabrication.
  • Obtain and hold certification in Shainin Red X and/or Six Sigma.
  • Experience troubleshooting and performing, root cause analysis of mechanical systems in a production environment.
  • Experience in 3D Design CAD of tooling and in-depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ASME Y14.5M-2009.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and monday.com. Must be an expert in the use of data analysis programs.
  • Design experience using SolidWorks CAD desired.
  • Organization of documentation and recordkeeping shall be to a high standard. Skilled at the use of Gantt charts and formal project management techniques.
  • Self-motivated with ability to drive work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to time manage and support multiple projects simultaneously and drive to complete on time.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Aptitude for detail with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Certification for Shainin Red X and/or Six Sigma desired.
  • Knowledge of hunting, shooting sports, firearms, or ammunition reloading.


Working Conditions:



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
