Shipfitter
Purpose:
- Valkyrie Enterprises, and its subsidiaries, has an immediate need for a Shipfitter ll, to support the company's Maritime Modernization Initiative to work in the Hampton Roads area on various shipyards.
Job Description:
- Able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches to perform the following in accordance with relevant codes and standards:
- Lay out and position various parts on shipboard structural forms.
- Fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures.
- Coordinate and plan order of fabrication.
- Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
- Mark location of holes to be drilled for all temporary fasteners to properly hold part in place for welding or riveting.
- Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
- Able to use hand and power tools to include scribes, levels, chippers, and grinders.
- Able to independently set-up and use portable burning/heating torches for fabrication and installation of steel plates and shapes using propane, acetylene, and oxygen.
- End prep of plate and shapes using an oxy-acetylene torch, or other mechanical means.
- Ensure all tasks are completed on time and follow scheduling requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required to foster a healthy teamwork environment.
- Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety and environmental policies and procedures.
- Perform Fire Watch and other duties when required.
Qualification:
- Must have a High School Diploma OR Trade School Certification and at least 4 years of relevant field experience.
- Must be able to understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22 and AWS A2.4.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of power tools, shipboard generic material types, and structural components.
- Must be able to pass eye test and workmanship qualification test.
Desired Qualifications:
- Able to obtain a passport.
- Technical/Professional Certifications.
Security Requirements:
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
Travel Requirements:
- Work schedule could occasionally include weekend work, based on work volume.
- May be required to travel to jobsites away from Shipyard and utilize company vehicle.
- Able to ride ships at sea for extended periods of time, if required.
- Up to 50% travel nationwide to include international travel as needed.
- If position requires travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases, candidate must be able to obtain (by start of position) and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL ID. Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes weighing 20 lbs. or more.
- Must be able to work in an industrial shipboard environment.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels, ladder usage, and manhole passage.
- Routine operation of trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts required.
- Able to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Able to use a respirator in environments with limited ventilation.
