SCOPE OF POSITION: This is an active support role of the summer camp program and will alternate duties to learn the operating routines of: the dining room/kitchen, service crew, camp counseling and various program areas through assigned tasks.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:



  • Must be at least 14 years of age
  • Previous camp experience preferred


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Support Duties:



  • Assist, with direction from assigned counselor, in supervising, actively engaging, and leading campers during assigned program time.
  • Assist, with direction from assigned counselor, in responding to, and providing opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns among campers.
  • Under the guidance of counselors and lead counselors, handle common behavioral and/or emotional issues with campers.
  • Communicate regularly with assigned counselor, conveying needs and concerns regarding campers.
  • Assist in the implementation of camp rules; report immediately any camper misconduct.
  • At least once: lead a camper devotion for your campers, participate in any element of a chapel service.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Adhere to camp health codes and safety guidelines for all campers.


Dining Hall & Service Duties:



  • Set and clear tables for each meal.
  • Assist with serving food during meals as requested.
  • Maintain cleanliness of dining room area including tables, floors, serving lines and bathrooms.
  • Help unload, move, and store supplies.
  • Adhere to work schedule set by Dining Room Coordinator.


Service Crew Duties:



  • Clean all common facilities, bathrooms, and meeting areas as scheduled.
  • Restock common bathrooms.
  • Assist with the set-up and takedown of program areas and meeting spaces.
  • Set up of organized activities as requested.
  • Help unload, move, and store supplies.
  • Remove trash throughout entire grounds once daily.


General Duties:



  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways in campers.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Work alongside and in agreement with the Program Director, SIT Lead, Corps Assistant and Corps Officers
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Encourage adherence to camp & Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide for the supervision and physical/emotional safety of campers and staff.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g. chapel, staff meetings, games, free-time, electives, etc.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Program Director, SIT Lead, Corps Assistant and Corps Officers


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:



  • Be a Christian with a demonstrated commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is interested in spiritual leadership.
  • Possess leadership skills, with the ability to assist in supervision and care for a cabin of campers.
  • Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
  • Must be patient, enthusiastic and be able to teach and lead a variety of small group activities.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Good character and integrity, with the ability to adapt to a camp environment.
  • Responsible individual with a desire to work with youth.
  • Self-starter.
  • Team player.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.


WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.
  • The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Works around dust, odor, and high noise levels.


MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
