Posting Summary
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for the Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine Department within New Jersey Medical School.

Under the direction of the principal investigator, conducts highly specialized and technical research involving animal models of disease.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Focuses on the role of alternative autophagy in mediating mitochondrial quality control in the heart and on signaling mechanisms of cardiac myocyte apoptosis using molecular biological and transgenic approaches.
  • Other tasks will include yeast two-hybrid screening and gene transfection in isolated cardiac myocytes.
  • Performs standard techniques involving biochemistry, cell culture and molecular biology such as Western blotting, PCR, immunofluorescence, light microscopy, cloning, and mutagenesis.
  • Assists in performing animal surgeries, experiments and data analysis.
  • Maintains mouse colonies, provides postoperative care and handles samples. Submits histology samples to the Histology lab and performs some histology analyses.
  • Generates, compiles and presents data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations. Maintains research database in accordance with Rutgers standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of laboratory equipment.
  • Must perform complex procedures and demonstrate manual dexterity. Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending.
  • Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6 feet.
  • Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone and by e-mail. Vision capable of viewing gauges, computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.
  • Must possess good organization and documentation skills and must demonstrate good communication skills in English.
  • Must be comfortable working quickly and accurately in a stressful, deadline driven work environment.
  • Must be able to prioritize and quickly learn new techniques and work independently, with careful attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work additional hours on short notice when necessary to meet key deadlines.
  • Must be continuously accessible by email.

Special Conditions

  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including overtime on short notice and some weekends and holidays.
  • May require working with radioactive materials.
