Why M Physicians? University of Minnesota Physicians Outreach Laboratories specializes in innovative, complex, diagnostic laboratory testing. Through clinical and interpretative medical direction from pathologists, doctoral scientists and other physicians, our labs ensure they deliver the highest quality of results. We provide the medical direction while University of Minnesota Medical Center performs the technical laboratory services. Grossing Technologist Overview Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Gross low-complexity specimens under direct supervision of a pathologist and/or pathologists' assistant
- Macroscopic examination of low-complexity specimens requiring entire submission of tissue for microscopic examination without selective sampling to include but not limited to: bladder biopsies, breast biopsies, cervical biopsies, endocervical/endometrial biopsies, gastrointestinal biopsies, gingival/oral biopsies, head and neck biopsies, heart biopsies, kidney biopsies, labia/vulva biopsies, lymph node biopsies (not requiring a lymphoma work up), liver biopsies, lung biopsies, omental biopsies, peritoneum biopsies, pleural biopsies (if entirely submitted), pericardium biopsies (if entirely submitted), prostate biopsies, salivary gland biopsies, skin shaves, skin punch biopsies, skin ellipses, ureter biopsies
- (Further advancement into higher complexity specimens requires advanced didactic and clinical training obtained by completing a NAACLS accredited pathologists' assistant training program or an ACGME accredited pathology residency program)
- Assistance with frozen section process including cutting specimens on cryostat, staining slides, cover slipping, contacting the Attending Pathologist and dictating gross description on tissue that was entirely submitted.
- Assessment of medical kidney biopsies
- Filing of pathologic gross photos into a database
- Photography of medical devices
- Assisting in Tissue Procurement (Bionet) orders
- Works in conjunction with surgical pathology and histology lab to ensure samples are received and accurately processed in a timely manner
- Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.
- Partners with patient/care-giver/management in care/decision making.
- Individualizes care/service plan to meet patient/customer needs.
- Modifies interventions/service based on population served.
- Provides patient/employee education based on assessment of learning needs of learner.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate degree in a chemical or biological science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
- Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS
- Possess a current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located if such licensing is required.
- At least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
