About the Job

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is seeking an Education and Outreach Coordinator to support the development, coordination, and financial sustainability of pre-K through graduate programs aimed at building a diverse workforce capable of addressing emerging opportunities in areas related to AI, data science, and research computing. Outreach is one of the ways that the University extends its expertise for the direct benefit of Minnesotans and other external audiences. This is a joint outreach position shared by Research Computing (RC) and the Data Science and AI (DSAI) Hub. The education and outreach coordinator is responsible for managing the development of education and outreach programs, coordinating and partnering with other outreach programs at the UMN, developing and sustaining community partnerships, working on short and long-term program financial sustainability, and working with RC and DSAI Hub's comprehensive strategy around outreach. The ideal candidate would have a working knowledge of AI and data science to best be able to coordinate with subject matter experts, assess the AI/data science needs, and identify opportunities in programming and funding.

Job Duties:

60% Manage strategy and development of education programs

  • Partner with private and public organizations to identify gaps and needs in workforce development, upskilling, and training in areas related to data science, artificial intelligence, spatial thinking, computing, and all areas of research computing
  • Partner with outreach programs at the UMN, community organizations, teacher associations, and with the MN Department of Education to identify gaps and needs in K-12 and teacher training programming and outcomes related to data science, artificial intelligence, spatial thinking, computing, and all areas of research computing
  • Develop and/or extend outreach programs in partnership with subject matter experts, including community members and University faculty and staff, based on identified needs and the priorities of RC and the DSAI Hub
  • Conduct regular environmental scans for potential partners and collaborators, including programs currently offered through the UMN's wide-reaching outreach efforts; develop and maintain strong relationships with these partners both at the UMN and externally
  • Manage education programs by developing plans, budgets, schedules, and resources
  • Ensure coordinated, efficient, and consistent operations of the programs
  • Provide appropriate governance and policy strategy for each education and outreach program, and develop policies and procedures relevant to the programs

20% Program funding

  • Pursue opportunities that attract funding for outreach services by identifying funding opportunities, facilitating connections, and building partnerships between sponsors and the program
  • Communicate and promote the outreach programs' capabilities internally and externally to build a reputation and attract funding
  • Identify and apply for funding opportunities to sustain outreach programs, including public and private funding sources
  • Manage external funding proposals and ensure execution of the program as outlined
  • Represent education and outreach programs to various agencies, organizations, committees, and other constituents and partners

20% Reporting and administration

  • Support RC Outreach Director and DSAI leadership to ensure compliance with funding requirements, if appropriate, such as time and effort reporting, grant results, and contract results
  • Address any compliance and licensing issues (e.g., comply with Safety of Minors for any under age 18 outreach)
  • Manage outreach programs, databases, and systems; create and present reports, findings, and proposals to communicate various programmatic, educational, and marketing elements
  • Oversee program scheduling and enrollment reporting analytics
  • Assist with marketing plan development and implementation, including review and approval of electronic and print materials
  • Provide project management that demonstrates strong leadership skills, personal initiative, and effective decision-making with resulting outcomes that are in line with strategic objectives
  • Develop and support partnerships based on principles of mutual respect, trust, shared power, and openness to different ways of knowing through community-engaged consultation; carry out effective working relationships with employees, students, other professionals, agencies, and the public
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a BA/BS with at least 6 years of relevant post degree experience
  • Passion for outreach
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of data science and/or AI

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in informal or formal learning settings
  • Experience developing educational programs for K12 and/or adults
  • Experience in corporate or academic research organizations
About the Department

Research Computing (RC) (rc.umn.edu) brings together a diverse portfolio of research computing and data resources available at the University of Minnesota, including high-performance computing, spatial data, data science, and artificial intelligence, and more. RC is a unit of UMN's Research and Innovation Office.

The Data Science and AI (DSAI) Hub (dsi.umn.edu), one of the five units in RC, aims to make a mark in data science research, nationally and internationally, by facilitating research used to address grand challenges facing our state, nation, and the world.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000 - $87,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
