Clinical Lab - Point of Care Testing

Job Summary

Responsible for monitoring, developing, and/or modifying all aspects of Point-of-Care Testing at approved POC testing locations for both Waived and Non-Waived tests. Responsibilities include:
1. Overseeing the daily operations of Point-of-Care and related testing
2. Operating and troubleshooting of Point-of-Care instruments and equipment
3. Performing monthly, quarterly, and semiannually audits at POC testing locations, generating
monthly QC statistic reports
4. Monitoring POC quality control results and assuring appropriate corrective action is taken
5. Auditing QC logs and POC compliance activities
6. Providing staff training of both non-waived and waived POC and competency validation
7. Writes and updates test procedures
8. Troubleshooting POC software, tracking POC instruments, and implementation of new POC sites to include installation and instrument connectivity
9. Duties also include licensure application and renewal, information management, quality assurance, proficiency testing, validation studies
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications


  • College Graduate with a BS or BA in a related science
  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
  • 2 Years recent experience in clinical laboratory
  • Demonstrated superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Assumes responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review
  • Evaluates new procedures and makes recommendations, as requested by a POCT Supervisor

Preferred Qualifications


  • ASCP or ASMT desirable
  • Experience with current Chemistry and/or Hematology automated equipment
  • Experience with current POCT equipment
  • Experience in technical training and competency assessment of healthcare professionals
  • Experience in statistical analysis of new methods
  • Experience in high-volume hospital clinical laboratory setting
  • Experience with writing SOPs
  • Word processing, spreadsheet and database applications

License/Certification


  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or temporary license pending passing the next scheduled licensure exam
