Job Summary
Samples and analyzes natural gas samples from various Company and customer facilities. Performs on-site testing of natural gas for odor intensity and corrosive constituents, and soil, water, air sampling for environmental and safety investigations. Generates analytical reports and quality control charts. Communicates the outcomes of investigations and analyses to internal and external parties. Assists Materials Testing area as needed. Key Accountabilities
- Performs high and low pressure natural gas sampling from production wells and storage field wells, transmission and distribution pipelines, compressed natural gas stations and customer facilities; analyses gas samples by GC/FID/TCD.
- Cleans and prepares gas sample cylinders; calibrates laboratory and field testing equipment.
- Communicate with manufacturer regarding equipment repairs.
- Analyse water samples from natural gas storage field locations.
- Perform on-site testing of natural gas for water, mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide content.
- Perform odor intensity surveys and atmosphere testing analysis.
- Obtain soil, water, and air samples from various field investigation sites; perform on-site contaminant testing for employee exposure.
- Prepare environmental soil/water samples for analysis.
- Assist in new product evaluations of gas handling materials (i.e pipe coatings, pipe, valves, regulators, and gas detectors) for addition to Approved Products List, as needed.
- Assist in quality assurance for materials inspections.
- Assist with state-wide fire extinguisher program and maintenance of inspection records.
- Develop Standard Work Instructions for various technical tasks.
- Generate spreadsheet-based quality control charts to monitor instrument performance.
- Log-in gas samples, generates multiple reports using database *Key accountabilities may vary, depending on the discipline or organization
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- This is a dualtrack base requirement job; education and experience requirements can be satisfied through one of the following options:
- High school or GED, and the knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through 5+ years of laboratory testing experience or gas/electric field experience
- Associate Degree in Chemistry, and the knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through 3+ years of laboratory testing or gas/electric field experience.
Other Qualifications
Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree in chemistry or engineering
- Ability to routinely travel throughout the State of Michigan, including the upper peninsula
- Experience performing odor intensity testing
- Natural gas sampling experience, including familiarity with the following sampling methods and field tests: API 14.1, GPA 2166, ASTM D1988, ASTM D4810, ASTM D4888
- Experience working for an ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory
Other Requirements
- Incumbents must be able to lift and move up to 60 lbs
- Proficient in electronic spreadsheet, database and word processing applications.
- May be required to fulfill substantial on-call and rotating shift requirements, and require initial and/or periodic drug or fitness for duty testing.
- Valid driver's (or 'equipment-appropriate') license, including any Company-determined certifications or endorsements, and compliance with any relevant Company driving/operating standards.
