DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for operating a variety of vehicles and equipment essential for general construction, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks, including snow removal and cindering operations at the Presque Isle State Park complex. The equipment you may handle includes, but is not limited to, the Menzi Muck A91 4x4 plus, John Deere dozer 450G, Caterpillar loader IT28G, John Deere tractor 5300, Case loader 621B, Case backhoe 580, GMC stake bed dump, and various dump trucks from GMC, Ford, and Chevrolet, as well as specialized machinery like the Bob Cat Tool Cat and Marine Travel Lift. You will also be tasked with hauling trailers that exceed 10,000 pounds. In addition to operating heavy machinery, you will perform general maintenance on park facilities and structures, which may involve building gates, repairing piers and docks, replacing picnic grills and tables, and installing or updating park signage. Grounds maintenance activities will also be part of your duties, including sand management, beach cleaning, brush hogging, mowing, and snow removal. You will dig trenches for the installation or repair of waterlines, sewer lines, and drainage systems, as well as foundations for small construction projects, and you will load and transport soil, sand, stone, and debris as needed. When not operating equipment, you will assist with various park maintenance tasks such as litter collection, restroom cleaning, painting, tree planting, and garbage disposal. Additionally, you will help set up for special events at the park and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. Minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment will also be part of your responsibilities, along with recommending equipment replacements and purchases, cleaning, and servicing machinery. You will conduct safety checks and inspections of equipment before operation, maintaining records for all operated machinery, including commercial vehicles over 32,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Furthermore, you will demonstrate the operation of assigned equipment to fellow employees and provide assistance to park visitors as needed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Shift hours and days vary due to operational need, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Weekends, holidays and all shifts as needed at 37.5 hours per week
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training.
Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.
Condition of Employment:
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the air brake restriction removed.
