The State and Local Tax (SALT) Manager will oversee all aspects of state and local tax compliance, planning, and audit management. This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate and timely tax filings, managing relationships with external tax service providers, and maintaining compliance with evolving tax laws and regulations. This role will also support broader income tax responsibilities, including return preparation and reconciliation.

This is a hybrid position based at Inotiv's Indianapolis office in the Castleton area, with an on-site presence required 3-4 days per week.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range for this role is $92,000 - $110,000 and can adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.

Key Responsibilities:

Sales and Use Tax Compliance:

  • Manage the end-to-end sales and use tax process across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external providers ensuring accurate and timely information exchange for return preparation.
  • Oversee the maintenance and validation of exemption certificates, ensuring compliance and readiness for audits.
  • Reconcile sales and use tax accounts monthly, addressing discrepancies promptly.

Audit Management:

  • Lead all state and local tax audits, coordinating with internal teams and external auditors.
  • Review and respond to audit inquiries, ensuring documentation is accurate and comprehensive.
  • Implement strategies to mitigate audit risks and manage potential exposures.

Property Tax Oversight:

  • Manage the preparation and filing of personal property tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local regulations.
  • Track and ensure timely payment of real property taxes, coordinating with relevant departments.

Interdepartmental Collaboration:

  • Work closely with Accounts Payable to ensure vendor invoices related to tax liabilities are processed and paid accurately.
  • Manage a relationship with the sales team and the accounts receivable team for appropriate application of sales tax on company invoices.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to gather necessary information for tax filings and audits.

State Income Tax Compliance and Provision Support:

  • Calculate state apportionment factors annually, supporting both provision and tax return processes.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of state tax provisions for both direct and consolidated states.
  • Support the review and reconciliation of state income and franchise tax accounts.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of state income tax extensions and annual income/franchise tax returns.
  • Coordinate with external providers for state and federal income tax compliance and external auditors for audit support.

Additional Tax Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the completion of the Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts Report (FBAR).
  • Oversee the annual completion of IRS Form 6602, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MST preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in state and local tax, with a focus on sales/use tax compliance and audit management.
  • Proficiency in tax compliance software, including Vertex Tax Decision Maker.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as JD Edwards (JDE) and Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).
  • Strong understanding of state and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with external tax providers:
    • Sales and use tax
    • State/federal income tax compliance
    • Audit coordination
  • Familiarity with managing exemption certificates and handling multi-jurisdictional tax issues.
  • Knowledge of property tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with state apportionment, income/franchise tax account reconciliation, and provision processes.
