Summary/Objective:

The Commercial Portfolio Manager position is primarily responsible for servicing and maintaining a portfolio of Commercial Loan Relationships. The candidate/incumbent must understand the elements of credit analysis and underwriting of Commercial Real Estate and Commercial & Industrial Member Loans to insure the proper oversight of the assigned Commercial Loan Portfolio. The role requires a high level of relationship management with interaction, communication and decision-making involving Member Businesses within assigned portfolios.

  • The Commercial Portfolio Manager is responsible for dealing with the assigned portfolio of existing Commercial Member Business Loans. Interaction and communication with Members and third party professionals (Accountants, Attorneys, Environmental Engineers, etc.) is essential. Face-to-Face, telephonic and other forms of communication are required. Driving is required as meetings and site visitations are required on an annual basis to maintained level required to know your customer and monitor performance of borrower.
  • The primary responsibility of the position is to service a large portfolio (raging from $50MM to $120MM in exposure with relationships totaling 20-40 relationships) of Member Business Loan Borrowers ~ supporting existing and future business banking needs, assessing Member's credit risk profile on an ongoing basis, overseeing required compliance with Loan Agreements, collection, review and analysis of required financial information, timely completion of Annual Reviews and validating the individual risk ratings of each loan and relationship at least annually.
  • Working collectively with others within the Commercial Lending Division to address, MBL needs, assess risk, recommend action and execute on recommendation is vital to the role.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with each individual Member is critical to insure success by meeting regularly with existing Business Members to understand challenges and opportunities of the Commercial Loan relationship.
  • Engage in Business Development within assigned Portfolio to increase Member Business Loan exposure, Deposits and other ancillary services to DCU. Cross-sell the CU's other products and services, referring members to appropriate staff as indicated.
  • Provide superior customer service including, but not limited to, appropriate and timely follow through with Members' requests. Responds to the needs of the Members within the portfolio including, but not limited to, modification of terms and conditions requests, new loan requests and general servicing questions.
  • Properly analyze the current financial condition of the member in order to assign an accurate Risk Rating; ensure that members adhere to the loan covenants; seek to obtain financial information in a timely manner; complete annual reviews and annual renewals of Lines of Credit in a timely manner (some reviews may be more frequent). Insure that Exceptions of Loan Documentation, Financial Covenant Compliance and other Member related requirements are kept at a minimum.
  • Monitor borrower's rate adjusments and maturity dates to work with borrowers on proactively refinancing, extending or modifying loans as needed to the best of DCU and borrowers benefit.
  • For new loans to current Members ~ structure credit terms and conditions (5 C's of credit) of a Member Business Loan within the parameters of DCU's Commercial Lending Operation Procedures. Negotiate prospective loan arrangement's terms and conditions with existing/propsective Members. In concert with Commercial Loan Administrators, prepare Term Sheets evidencing proposed structures for review by existing /prospective Members. Work with the Credit Team to create a CPS for presentation to Loan Committee. Make presentations to Loan Committee in support of approval of a credit proposal. Oversee the preparation of the Commitment Letter for benefit of the existing/prospective Member.
  • Coordinate loan documentation, closings and processing of approved loans; ensure loans are closed in accordance with the approval and CU policies and procedures; ensure loans are processed according to documentation, ensure that collateral is properly documented and approve loan disbursements in accordance with the documents.
  • Understand and work within the commercial lending policies and procedures, Pega, XP, Suntell, and Nautilus.
  • Understand and work within the construct of the OCTANT Business Services relationship.
  • Actively follow and address Exceptions within the assigned Portfolio in a timely fashion.
  • Keep delinquency at a minimum by contacting borrowers early when payments are late. The Portfolio Manager must understand the reasons for delinquency and if there are warning signs for a downgrade or future problems take the appropriate action to minimize delinquency and any losses to the CU. These may include obtaining more collateral, or restructuring the loan, etc. Supervisor should be informed immediately if red flags arise.
  • Consistently apply good decision making techniques pertaining to inquiries, approvals, requests as they apply to existing policies and procedures, keeping within assigned approval limits and using these instances as learning tools for employee development.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of financial industry, economy, market conditions, rates, vendors and competition.
  • Participate in various internal and external committees as assigned by senior management.
  • Complete all required CU Training within the required timeframes. Complete
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to assist the CU in achieving the Success Sharing Goals, and overall customer service.
  • Coordinate loan closings with approved legal counsel and DCU's Operations personnel that are responsible for loan documentation review. Insure that all loans are closed in conformance with the approval granted. Attend closings to represent and sign on behalf of DCU.
  • If deterioration is seen in a credit relationship, it is the responsibility of the Portfolio Manager to assess the risk and immediately bring it to the attention of Management with recommendations for risk rating adjustments and action steps/plans.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Managers(s).



What You'll Need




  • Bachelor's degree (Business related field preferred) or equivalent.
  • Three (3) or more years of commercial lending (C&I and/or Real Estate) experience with a record of accomplishment with Credit Analysis and exhibited strong communication skills.
  • Formal Commercial Credit Training or demonstrated knowledge of financial analysis, underwriting, loan structuring and preparation of internal loan proposal packages for approving authorities.
