HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The ideal candidate for this position is a dynamic team member who will work with the Life and Earth and Sciences department on the Perimeter College, Dunwoody campus. The Laboratory Coordinator is the chief safety officer for several lab rooms on a campus. Under the general direction of the assigned administrator, the Laboratory Coordinator plans, organizes, and directs the operations of multiple instructional science laboratories on a college campus; ensures science labs operate efficiently, effectively, and safely; trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; performs related duties as assigned. Lab instruction will be required at the discretion of the direct supervisor.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Coordinator are the following:



  • Plan, organize, and direct the operations of instructional science laboratories.
  • In coordination with the department chair and faculty develop, record, implement and oversee work/lab policies and procedures, safe and effective work and learning environment in support of student learning objectives.
  • Train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate the performance of assigned laboratory technicians, instructional assistants, and other personnel.
  • Schedule personnel including student assistants to support the instructional science laboratory program.
  • Teach up to 3 lab courses per semester at the needs of the department
  • Serve as resource person to instructors.
  • Work with associate chair in developing departmental budget needs.
  • Monitor & maintains budgets for assigned functions and activities, including specifying, ordering, receiving, and issuing materials, parts and supplies.
  • Oversee the inventory of equipment and expendable supplies.
  • Recommend lab equipment and supplies, and coordinate the purchase of new equipment and software.
  • May oversee collection and maintenance of live & preserved plant and animal specimens, and bacterial cultures using appropriate techniques, equipment and procedures.
  • Oversee preparation of lab material & equipment for lab sessions and class demonstrations according to the instructions of the faculty.
  • Acquire, control, safely store, operate, maintain, and repair large inventory of delicate, expensive lab equipment & material in the assigned area, which may include hazardous materials.
  • Act as the chemical hygiene officer for the science labs.
  • Ensure security of assigned assets.
  • Schedule maintenance of assigned equipment & order replacement components as needed.
  • Coordinate lab upgrades & renovations in consort with faculty & department chair.
  • Maintain all appropriate state & federal permits and required annual reports.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and ensure compliance with federal & state regulatory, safety & health standards, ensure safe and legal acquisition, use, storage & disposal of all chemicals & hazardous materials in the science labs.
  • Teach classes as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements:



  • Master's degree in the assigned research, or Bachelor's degree in the assigned research area and two years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.


Preferred Hiring Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for the labs, as well as how to safely use them; safety regulations, procedures & practices; current software needed for instruction.
  • Ability to lift or move equipment in the lab. Master's degree and Microbiology preferred.
  • Collegiate biology teaching experience.
