This 8-week internship will primarily be based at our Tremont site (413 N. Tremont St., Indianapolis, IN 46222), with occasional travel to our 38th and Sheridan location and Bloomington site. Reliable transportation is required. The internship will run from early June to late July and will pay $15 per hour (non-negotiable). Overview: We are seeking a motivated and thoughtful intern to support our ongoing efforts to create a more empowering and accessible work environment for employees with disabilities at our manufacturing site. This role will focus on research, data analysis, employee engagement, and practical recommendations to enhance job training, workplace design, and career development opportunities. Key Responsibilities: Job Transition & Empowerment:
Identify barriers that limit employees from transitioning out of repetitive or low-complexity tasks. Analyze current training processes and recommend improvements that promote skill development and job mobility. Work with leadership to frame data use in ways that are accessible and meaningful for team members with varying abilities.

Instruction Design Evaluation:
Examine current instruction formats (photos and text) for effectiveness. Explore worker-centered instructional approaches, including visual or video aids.
Workplace Accessibility Assessment:
Assess physical accommodations across the site (e.g., automatic doors, restrooms, seating in workspaces). Identify gaps and recommend design or equipment improvements to enhance workplace function. Make suggestions to improve physical safety and comfort in manufacturing roles.

Employee Engagement & Input Gathering:
Engage directly with staff to gather feedback, observations, and ideas. Incorporate frontline insights into practical recommendations for site improvements.
Training & Communication:
Evaluate current job aids and training methods for clarity and effectiveness. Develop and deliver training sessions that support different learning styles. Research and attend training events related to employee development and workplace improvement.
Data Analysis & System Improvements:
Review existing data related to customer orders, productivity, and workforce development. Build out and refine system reporting to reduce manual processes and improve insight generation. Explore additional insights data can provide to enhance job design and employee experience.
Required Competencies:
Degree and Credential Requirements - Full-time juniors, seniors, or graduate students with a concentration in social work, psychology, non-profit management, or criminal justice, and an interest in an administrative or professional career in the field of vocational rehabilitation. Strategic Support - Assists internal and external teams in understanding business challenges and helps identify solutions through data to meet goals. Develops basic problem-solving skills and can consider different approaches while staying objective. Works with others to analyze issues and communicates findings in clear, easy-to-understand ways for various audiences. Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend customer and employee needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world. Organizational Aptitude - Attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing multiple tasks in an organized and timely fashion.
Preferred Competencies:
Industry Knowledge & Experience - Supports data collection and reporting to drive data-driven decisions, using tools like Excel and Google Sheets. Basic knowledge of statistical analysis, data visualization, and workforce development. Experience or research in manufacturing environments, inventory control, and workplace safety. Skilled in presentation design and familiar with survey tools and reporting software. Ethical - Adheres to procedures and protocol, including maintaining confidentiality in passwords, logging on and off procedures, and adherence to Goodwill's values. Uses discretion when sharing and protects private information. Autonomy - Takes initiative without waiting to be directed, does what is asked, and works until the job is completed. Takes ownership of mistakes and learns from them rather than makes excuses.
The Maurine Miller internship was established in memory of Dr. Maurine Miller and provides a college student interested in a career in vocational rehabilitation, training, or a related human service field with an opportunity to gain a more in-depth understanding of Goodwill's work in these areas.
