The purpose of this position is to serve the citizens of the City and visitors to the Police Department. This is accomplished by completing station duties, greeting the public, answering and directing telephone calls, documenting calls for service via the telephone or walk-in complaints, and assisting Police Officers with low priority calls. Other duties include obtaining facts and reporting facts effectively in a written report in order to allow for follow-up investigation or clearance to be made in the case.

Essential Functions

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Greets and directs the public, keeps log of and disseminate proper identification badges for visitors to the department, receive and process mail and packages, manage fingerprint requests, answer phones and direct telephone requests, requests police officers or detention officers when necessary.
  • Documents calls for service via the telephone or walk-in complaints by obtaining pertinent facts and determining appropriate response. Writes and inputs reports into the department's computer system to allow for follow-up investigation or clearance to made in the case. Makes NCIC/TCIC inquiries as they apply to the specific report.
  • Informs complainants that an official offense/incident report has been filed, gives complainants service numbers, and explains the departmental complaint process. Photographs and registers sex offenders.
  • Participates in the crime scene reporting process by taking photographs, dusting for fingerprints, logging physical evidence and completing evidence reports.
  • Uses the Penal Code in assisting Police Officers with traffic control, responding to low priority (level 3 &4) calls and performs security patrols. Uses interview techniques when interacting with citizens concerning various elements of the law (property, white collar crime, drug crimes, etc.).
  • Enhances public safety and supports police operations by performing fieldwork in all weather conditions.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with no prior relevant work experience.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certification and Other Requirements
  • Valid Texas Class C Drivers License.

Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Periods of standing and walking relevant to traffic control, assisting motorists, and crime prevention patrols.
  • Additional work within an office environment.
  • Medium - Exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally.

Reading

Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
