The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Contractor Safety Management, the Senior Safety Specialist will drive the development, implementation, and enhancement of strategic safety programs across TC Energy's US Gas operations.

This key role provides technical expertise that shapes the design and delivery of comprehensive safety initiatives to effectively mitigate health and safety risks throughout company operations and projects. The position includes making strategic recommendations to US Gas leadership regarding safety program effectiveness, policy development, and procedural improvements.

What you'll do

  • Lead and participate in the development and roll out of occupational health and safety programs, policies, processes and procedures, including the ability to revise and create these documents as necessary
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, ensure effective processes are in place and provide safety expertise to help facilitate business processes and decisions
  • Plan, implement and administer complex safety sub programs and/or projects (e.g. Occupational Health & Safety Standard, TC Energy Standards, Specifications, etc.)
  • Assess the potential impact beyond TC Energy when making decisions and recommendations as it relates to safety
  • Keen awareness of emerging regulatory changes, industry trends and issues
  • Actively participate in the development of strategies to affect corporate values and organizational change
  • Develop safety management plans, review site-specific safety plans, and participate in project and program meetings
  • Consistently manage on-site Safety Inspection staff, ensuring effective deployment of resources, and value creation for Project Management teams
  • Identify and assess the safety and health risks associated with execution of projects
  • Work closely with Project safety coordinators, employees and managers to impart the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize process and occupational safety hazards
  • Provide direct support to multiple Project Managers concerning a variety of Projects on an ongoing basis as assigned
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations and audits
  • Identify safety documentation and records to meet regulatory requirements, as well as to provide data for problem solving and decision making
  • Liaise with contractors, management, industry associations and other external stakeholders to ensure TC Energy's business needs are understood and met
  • Manage numerous complex safety initiatives simultaneously with tight and conflicting deadlines
  • Provides safety support for Emergency Management situations
  • Coach and Mentor peers and leadership related to health and safety
  • Other tasks as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of safety leadership experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) or related field; equivalent professional experience will be considered
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or recognized equivalent
  • Demonstrated success developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive health and safety programs
  • Experience developing, implementing, and overseeing health and safety programs is required
  • Previous project management experience will be seen as an asset
  • Completed various safety training (e.g. Hazard Assessment, Incident Investigation, Auditing, Inspecting, recognized Occupational Health and Safety post-secondary modules, etc.)
  • Strong technical expertise related to safety (hazard identification, incident investigations, root cause analysis, emergency preparedness and response, etc.)
  • High level analytical ability and strategic thinking required to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources and to formulate recommendations
  • Previous experience and/or the ability to lead and conduct audits and investigations
  • Proven ability to interact at all levels of the organization and across the lines of businesses
  • Effective communication, technical writing and public speaking skills are essential

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of incident investigations and audits is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of audiences
  • Leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence people
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Technical acumen in Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Lock Out Tag Out, Hot Work, Elevated Work, Process Safety, Vehicle Safety and related areas

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (a record) for review
  • This position will involve travel and overnight stays away from home (estimated up to 40% of work schedule during peak work periods)
  • Occasionally be available for extended work hours outside of standard business hours, call-out support and emergency support as needed
