Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Employment Relations Coordinator (ER Coordinator), the Leave Specialist functions as the subject matter expert for the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) within the Dean's Office. The incumbent will independently manage FMLA/WFMLA and leave of absence administration for SMPH staff including consultation, eligibility checks, facilitation of administrative processes, and implementation of leave programs.
The incumbent is expected to demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisors, co-workers, and all customers. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information with tact and discretion. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Effectively share knowledge and skills obtained through professional development. A successful candidate will be able to multi-task, prioritize, and manage a high-volume administrative workload.
Responsibilities:
Interprets and administers the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and leave of absence programs for a specified work unit to support compliant administration and timely return-to-work.
- 20% Serves as a subject matter expert and main point of contact for staff regarding leave of absences and affiliated programs
- 40% Receives and responds to individual requests and inquiries according to established policies, procedures, regulations, and laws
- 20% Documents, audits, and requests required documentation for eligibility or needed updates as required by established policies and procedures
- 10% Tracks leave of absences and completes lifecycle transactions in various mediums as required by established policies, regulations, and laws
- 5% Contributes to the development of strategies for reasonable accommodations
- 5% Collaborate with Employment Relations Director and Employment Relations Coordinator on outreach and communication efforts to inform and educate SMPH employees and HR/Payroll Staff on FMLA/WFMLA and the SMPH medical leave program.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: - At least 2 years' experience working in Human Resources - Strong organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and independently manage workload - Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with employees, managers, and third-party administrators and relay complex information - Attention to detail, sound judgment, and decision-making abilities - Proficiency in using multiple sources of information and software systems - e.g., HR databases, Microsoft Word, Excel - to maintain accurate personnel records, organizational data, or leave requests.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications: - 1 year experience working directly with FMLA/WFMLA or other leaves of absence programs
Preferred Qualifications: - 1 year experience working in an HR Compliance role
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities: - Understanding of the federal and Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Acts (FMLA/WFMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state and local leave laws - Ability to analyze and interpret complex information related to leave policies and employee eligibility - Problem-solving skills to resolve complex leave-related issues - Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information - Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong initiative and collaboration skills

Salary:
Minimum $58,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications The starting salary for the position is $58,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
