The Regional Medical Director (RMD) is responsible for implementation of long and short term strategic healthcare initiatives. This role will provide leadership of medical group clinical operations and has ultimate responsibility for management, coordination and accountability for group clinical operations within the organization. Key requirements are the ability to achieve operational goals to ensure patient safety, achieve targets for quality and clinical outcomes, ensure profitability and growth related to the Company's financial performance, and provide an enriching and supportive workplace for providers and teammates consistent with our Core Values. This role integrates Lean principles, practices and tools to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction.

Clinical/Administrative ratio: 0-10% Clinical, 90-100% Administrative/Leadership.

Scope of Leadership: Regional scope, Manages 2+ Medical Directors; can have P&L responsibility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:




  • Oversees and manages the Market Leadership team and ensures assigned market deliverables are implemented in an effective and timely manner.
  • Develops and maintain a collegial relationship with physicians (employed and contracted) in order to support the business efforts of the organization.
  • Implement market specific initiatives and ensures that processes and procedures are aligned with the business model.
  • Drives improvement of quality indicators in assigned market by identifying, directing, and executing continuous quality improvement activities or processes.
  • Oversees and manages the assigned Medical Directors as well as provides leadership and mentoring in the establishment of departmental objectives related to staffing plans, financial goals, etc.
  • Mentors all Medical Directors and Associate Medical Directors and help develop them as a leader within the market leadership team, and in the organization at large.
  • Perform and/or review annual evaluations of assigned Medical Directors and Associate Medical Director and other providers as directed.
  • Participate in Committees, as needed.
  • Collaborates with Market Operations, Growth, Experience, and Provider Relations staff in the market(s).
  • Assists in the identification of potential physician practice acquisitions in assigned market. Support the clinics under integrations.
  • Partnering with the Clinical Affordability team to support new innovative approaches to making healthcare more efficient and meaningful to PCPs and patients alike; ultimately bending the cost curve in region.
  • Developing and cascading clinical outcome/improvement messaging to business units to foster tighter working culture.
  • Establish an environment that embraces the cultural values of the organization: relationships, performance, compassion, integrity, innovation, and inclusion
  • Partner with market president & operational dyad to meet budgetary and financial targets

Required Qualifications:



  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Current board certification from ABMS or ABOS specialty board in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in applicable states or ability to obtain license rapidly (within 4 months of hire date)
  • Valid DEA required



Preferred Qualifications:



  • MBA/MHA highly preferred



Experience:



  • 8+ years leading/managing clinicians
  • Proven leadership in highly matrixed organization
  • History of effective leadership of medical directors (managing high performers) and dyad leadership
  • Deep knowledge of drivers of highly performing Medicare Advantage practices and highly coordinated care
  • Board Certified physician with 10+ years clinical practice of medicine, unrestricted medical license in TX or ability to obtain rapidly



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:



  • Ability to travel across region of responsibility.
  • Ability to become credentialed by health plans.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to comfortably use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Thorough understanding of medical group business models and clinical processes.
  • Excellent understanding of medical group financial concepts, including revenue cycle, physician compensation models, and preferably including managed care financial concepts (capitation, IBNR, MLR).
  • Strong analytical/data analysis skills and comfort developing and implementing medical action plans.
  • Strong leadership, communication, written and negotiation skills required.
  • Ability to manage change essential. Must be able to focus on priorities independently.
  • Comfort with conflict management.
  • Supervisory skills, including clinical mentoring.
  • Ability to influence team members without direct reporting relationships.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language fluently and document clearly in the medical record.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the Spanish language is a plus.



The salary range for this role is $343,500 to $516,500 per year. Salary Range is defined as total cash compensation at target. The actual range and pay mix of base and bonus is variable based upon experience and metric achievement. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
