The Vice President, Strategy is a key leader in WHS within Optum Health, accountable for leading overall business strategy, planning and strategic partnerships positioning the combined medical and behavioral health business for differentiated, sustainable growth across channels.

This dynamic, integral role reports directly to the CEO. This is a critical team member within a highly functioning Office of the CEO working closely with Business Operations, Finance, Clinical, Network, Product and Channel P&L owners, along with interfacing with executive leadership across the enterprise on strategic, business imperatives.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Set global business strategy informed by internal data and insights, balanced by outside-in market intelligence and dynamics
  • Lead annual business planning and long-range modeling in close partnership with Finance
  • Provide dedicated channel strategy focus working directly with executive channel leaders (e.g. Employer, Payer, Government, Provider, BH Care Delivery) to outline opportunities and priorities, informing capital prioritization and product governance
  • Drive cross-functional strategic projects and key initiatives to advance quality, access, experience and overall positive impact on those we have the privilege to serve, e.g. concept discovery and analysis per condition, population, treatment, etc. to inform proposed strategies with Network, Clinical, Product and SMEs as applicable
  • Own fast-paced, highly-visible business development and strategic imperatives including M&A, strategic partnerships and joint ventures, representing the WHS portfolio working closely with Finance and Corporate Development
  • Lead centralized WHS partnership office, coordinating intake and evaluation through a standardized council/process, driving partner pursuit decisions and communicating across stakeholders, strategically defining the role vendors play in our portfolio to advance experience and outcomes
  • Advise and support the organization in a general management leadership function in conjunction with the Chief of Staff to the CEO, in order to drive enterprise deliverables, operating cadence and communications across Optum Health
  • Represent the CEO and the WHS business as a trusted proxy across complex, internal and external relationships and forums; strong executive presence, personal credibility and successful organizational navigation to work effectively is required

Required Qualifications:



  • 10+ years of proven, relevant industry leadership experience (healthcare, insurance, finance and/or consulting) with demonstrated success in developing business strategies, planning and execution that realizes growth potential
  • Solid financial acumen including strategic business development, corporate development, corporate strategy, or senior level consulting experience with 5+ years of experience in driving transactions (including M&A or non-M&A transactions)
  • Deep experience collaborating and navigating large organizations and cross-functional teams on demanding, complex engagements
  • Deep understanding of and experience with UnitedHealth Group's enterprise, business units and capabilities
  • Demonstrated track record of productive relationships with C-Suite and senior-level client executives
  • Demonstrated success accessing and influencing senior level internal and/or external clients



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MHA)
  • Prior P&L ownership or portfolio management experience
  • Experience with M&A and non-M&A transactions (e.g., JVs, affiliations, MSA agreements, etc.)
  • Understanding of healthcare to include finance, product, operations, clinical, network, sales, marketing, etc.
  • Advanced communication and negotiating ability in the context of complex fortune 100 organizations
  • Advanced aptitude for conflict resolution and problem-solving
  • Demonstrated resiliency and resourcefulness, an energized, curious, true 'team of teams' player, modeling a one WHS mindset, accountable for delivering the highest quality in everything we do

The salary range for this role is $191,800 to $364,800 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
