The DOT Driver Trainer utilizes a variety of training methods to ensure the organization's drivers can safely operate commercial and non-commercial vehicles; conducts Department of Transportation (DOT) road tests on new hire and current driving employees; evaluates and documents DOT testing process; and issues road test certificates for approved organizational drivers.
Responsibilities
- Conduct DOT road tests on new hire and current employees
- Evaluate and document DOT testing process
- Issue road test certificate for approved DOT drivers
- Train less experienced drivers on the pre-trip inspection process
- Help drivers to develop safe driving habits
- Conduct driving simulator exercises and document employee performance
- Conduct DOT Hours of Service and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) training
- Collaborate with Human Resources team during new hire qualification
- Assist with vehicle inspections, ensure accurate documentation, and communicate with maintenance team about necessary repairs
- Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies by attending all required HSE safety training sessions, safety meetings, and always utilize proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years' of commercial vehicle driving experience, required
- Maintaining a Class A CDL with Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT), cargo tank endorsements, and a clean driving record, required
- Experience operating all types of commercial motor vehicles, required
- Must have extensive knowledge of DOT transportation regulations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, HAZMAT Regulations, state transportation laws, and DOT driver testing requirements
- Must be able to critically assess a trainee's qualification to safely operate commercial and non-commercial vehicles
- Excellent presentation skills, able to pass on expert knowledge in classroom and hands-on environments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to effectively interact with personnel at all organizational levels
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills, able to clearly document and maintain accurate records
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications and able to quickly learn other work-related software
- Must be able to maintain self-control under extreme stressful situations
- Must be physically able to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, crawl, walk on uneven surfaces, and climb equipment ladders or stairs throughout the work shift
- Must be physically able to work indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to hot or cold temperatures
- Must be physically able to climb into and out of commercial motor vehicles
