Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) is housed in the Division of Student Affairs. RecWell fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources. RecWell offers comprehensive recreation and wellness programming including; fitness, aquatics, informal recreation, outdoor adventures, competitive sports, Esports, and wellness education. The department strives to provide opportunities that enhance student success.
Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician/Athletic Trainer is the primary responder responsible for providing care for routine and emergent injuries sustained during Club Sports events. Playing a vital role in the department's emergency action plan, EMT/AT's work with the Competitive Sports Staff to ensure club participants, spectators and visitors are afforded a reasonably safe participation environment.

Task & Supervision
EMT/AT's report directly to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and may receive additional direction from all members of the Competitive Sports Leadership Team (Competitive Sports Coordinator and Graduate Assistant/Intern). These staff members respond to emergencies providing efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured abiding by the department's emergency action plan. In addition, EMT/AT's are responsible for treating minor injuries.
In addition to providing immediate care, EMT/AT's are responsible for determining a participant's fitness for returning to play including evaluating the potential for sustained concussions. EMT/AT's should monitor environmental factors that may impact participant and spectator safety. In the event of the need to deny participation or modify a play schedule, these staff must exhibit strong leadership and communication to ensure potential risks are mitigated.
EMT/AT's daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the follow:
Event Coverage (90%)

  • Provide onsite care and management of injuries including prevention, evaluation and treatment
  • Monitor and assess environmental factors that may impact safety of participants
  • Communicate with players, coaches and staff regarding the injury status of participants


Communication & Record Keeping (10%)

  • Complete all required documentation regarding injury care
  • Monitor medical supply inventory levels and communicate replacement needs

Position will begin early August 2025. Hours vary based on sport club competitions.
Minimum Qualifications

  • North Carolina EMT-Basic Certification
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must possess the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in a fast pace and flexible work environment


Preferred Qualifications

  • North Carolina Certified Athletic Trainer Certification
  • North Carolina EMT-Intermediate Certification
  • North Carolina EMT-Paramedic Certification
  • Prior experience working in a sports environment/managing sports-related injuries
