Job Summary

Performs a wide variety of duties requiring specific knowledge of the hospital's policies and procedures. Meets the hospital's professional, clinical, technical, communication and documentation requirements and standards and to make decisions based on established guidelines. Demonstrates competent professionalism and courtesy during frequent interactions with management/administration, doctors, allied healthcare professionals, patients, general public and local schools, hospitals and sports teams.

Essential Functions

  • Provides athletic training services to athletes at appointed high school and any other assigned school(s) or site as required.

  • Utilizes appropriate, sound and up-to-date clinical techniques to effectively assess and treat athletic injuries.

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of diagnosis/conditions seen in the profession of Athletic Training.

  • Selects, performs and interprets the results of ATC examinations of appropriate systems

  • Performs and interprets standardized assessments as determined by appropriateness of athlete.

  • Identifies actual or potential problems that would impact the Athletic Training regimen as well as the overall inter-disciplinary care.

  • Establishes specific treatment plan and goals based on the result of the initial assessment considering all aspects of athlete's condition: age, education level, cultural background and/or any other services the athlete is receiving

  • Communicates with appropriate members including physicians, rehab, parent/guardian, athletic directors, coaches, strength coaches. Documents athlete status in designated EMR or equivalent.

  • Provides timely payroll information.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Comply with any and all policies regarding healthcare delivery as indicated and outlined within the Athletic Injury Management section of assigned school or school district.

  • Completes annual mandatory computer-based training, competency review and required employee health testing.

  • Represent organization as outreach team member

  • Attends coaches/parent meetings as available

  • Seeks related tasks in down time and performs other duties as assigned. Supplemental hospital staffing in times of need

  • Coordinates pre- and post-participation exams and acquires protective equipment for athletes as needed.

  • Provides athletic training services at sponsored sporting events. (Special Events).

  • Assists school with management of infection risks & protocols in athletics. Provides care in conjunction with DHEC and/or district guidelines.

  • Initiates and conducts PI activities for the department or clinical programs.

  • Takes a leading role in the implementation of programs, processes and procedures and in the re-evaluation of current programs and processes

  • Motivates, challenges other team members by sharing new information, proposing initiatives, participating in brain-storming sessions and demonstrating creativity

  • Represents discipline or service area in interdisciplinary forums within Prisma Health and supports the credentialing and regulatory requirements

  • Monitors and documents work plan progression on a quarterly basis

  • Responsible for providing documentation of work plan accomplishments to supervisor/manager at annual review.

  • Provides and helps coordinate hospital and departmental orientation for new staff.

  • Facilitates new staff on completion of clinical competencies

  • Provides supervision and serves as a primary resource to clinical staff and assists them in refining their skills

  • Serves as a consultant in their clinical area of expertise.

  • Plans, attends and markets/supports Prisma Health sponsored educational opportunities, community events and departmental programs

  • Participates in other department and/or professional activities

  • Establishes annual goals related to stated corporate and department initiatives

  • Provides supporting information related to the progress made toward achieving established annual goals

  • Supports corporate leadership initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training or Physical Education w/ Athletic Training emphasis

  • Experience - One (1) year experience as Certified Athletic Trainer

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of the education and/or experience requirements indicated above, candidates hired prior to July 1, 2022 may qualify with a Bachelors Degree and 1 years of experience. Any candidates hired between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 may qualify with a Bachelors degree and 2 years of applicable experience. After July 1, 2023 candidates may qualify with a Bachelors Degree and 3 years of applicable experience, if a Masters Degree has not been obtained.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • South Carolina DHEC Athletic Training Certificate required. Effective July 19, 2024, team members are required to hold an active Athletic Training license through South Carolina Labor, Licensing and Regulation Board.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)

  • Proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, database)

  • Data entry skills

  • Mathematical skills

  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state certification guidelines and concussion law.
