Job Summary

Responsible for all activities performed by the department. Establishes the overall objectives and initiatives of the department to support the goals and long-range plans of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).

The salary range is $120,837 - 174,607 (12-month)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, business management or construction management from a school approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • Prospective candidate will need to complete a bachelor's degree in appropriate areas of study including engineering, environmental science, or other related fields.
  • Registration as a professional Engineer or Architect in the State of Wisconsin is required per Board Policy 4.02.
  • Valid State of Wisconsin motor vehicle operator's license and availability of a properly insured personal vehicle at time of appointment and during employment.
  • Requires a minimum of ten years of high-level facilities management, administrative, and supervisory experience including budget development, long-range planning, contract administration, and policy/procedure development.
  • Demonstrate success with alternative energy sources; solar, energy efficient lighting and HVAC.
  • Demonstrate success in the areas of building and operational sustainability across portfolio of buildings, energy use reduction, landfill diversion, green cleaning, etc.
Responsibilities

  • Directs and supervises, through department managers and coordinators, the operations of the Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services.
  • Prepare the annual department budget, including the MPS capital budget, and implement adequate controls to monitor annual expenditures.
  • Work to maintain effective district-community relations. Maintain effective communication links with field and central office administrators to ensure quality delivery of services.
  • Evaluates department operations with view toward streamlining and prepare efficiency and cost benefit analyses to ensure that services are provided in a most cost efficient and responsible manner.
  • Monitor the performance of department operations to ensure conformity to established policies, procedures, objectives, work rules, and priorities.
  • Attend Board and committee meetings, prepare presentations, and make recommendations pertaining to District and department issues that are associated with or impact areas of responsibility.
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce standards, policies, and procedures relating to the planning, operation, repair, maintenance, and construction of buildings and grounds, and ensure compliance of maintenance, operations, and construction activities as related to federal, state, and local codes and ordinances.
  • Review and approve all final payments to contractors and vendors for the completion of formal contracts.
  • Recommend candidates for hire who report directly to this position and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Assign duties, review completed work, make hiring recommendations, prepare performance appraisals, and issue disciplinary action for department.
  • Provides leadership and support of the districts plans to incorporate sustainability activities aimed at reducing the environmental impact of MPS operations.
  • Initiates, directs, supervises, and supports sustainability project manager on all sustainable projects and district activities, including energy management, waste and recycling strategies, potable and storm water management, LEED or comparable green building standards, conservation, green initiatives, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Initiates, directs, supervises and supports sustainability project manager on sustainability construction projects, including the development of project scope and construction documents monitoring and managing construction projects along with on-going maintenance.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
