Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service. Mechanical coordinates and oversees the repair, inspection, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing and maintenance of 1,180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The department's goal is to provide safe, clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers. Reporting to the Senior Director, Mechanical Capital Projects, the Sr Mgr, Mechanical & Electrical Rolling Stock Engineering oversees all engineering functions of mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical systems for large complex capital rolling stock projects, which include modification campaigns, overhauls, and procurement of new rolling stock. The Senior Manager, Mechanical & Electrical Rolling Stock Engineering supervises a team of three Mechanical Engineers and four Electrical Engineers. The Primary Duties include: Supervise the preparation of mechanical and electrical design packages including technical specifications, drawings, technical calculations, scope, schedule, and budgets for the procurement of mechanical and electrical designs and systems, for rolling stock projects. Participate in the contract award process including reviewing designs and technical drawings; supervising material testing, first article inspections, change orders, and contract modifications for accuracy and compliance with federal and municipal regulations and codes, design standards, and project specifications; and negotiating costs. Prepare designs, material lists, and cost estimates for the installation and repair of mechanical equipment to be performed in-house. Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors ensuring services are delivered on time, within budget, and according to specifications; assist in resolving manufacturing problems; and inspect completed work for compliance with design and engineering standards. Lead engineering teams in testing and assessing equipment for state of good repair, resolving manufacture and design issues, and recommending and overseeing equipment repair, maintenance, and/or replacement based on cost efficiencies. Approve time off, coordinate staff schedules, fill vacancies as necessary, and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives. Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures. Make recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
