Intake Coordinator

The Salvation Army Midland Division Alton Shelter located in Alton, IL, is looking for a Intake Coordinator. This individual will perform the duties of completing intakes on incoming residents, maintain case files, obtain information from clients as needed, and maintain the data base, which includes client data entry, maintaining statistics for monthly reporting, gathering in house stats for number of meals, bed nights, community referrals, and other grant reporting obligations.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week with starting pay of $16.50 per hour.

Essential Functions



  1. Responsible for completion of client intakes and data management on the Alton Booth House scattered site program.
  2. Admit homeless persons to the program, complete intake, communicate with housing provider to secure rooms and input client into database.
  3. Screen admissions for weapons and substance use, confiscate both if needed.
  4. Observe occupants' behavior and screen for cause persons displaying disruptive behavior and suspected to be under the influence of drugs including alcohol.
  5. Maintain order and contact emergency medical services or police as needed.
  6. Complete Alton Booth House scattered site daily recordkeeping.
  7. Maintain the Alton Booth House office.
  8. Maintain client data base with room location and contact numbers.
  9. Advise clients as to services provided by The Salvation Army and other organizations.
  10. Assist the Alton Shelter Manager as needed with client case management efforts.
  11. Assist with volunteer church groups.
  12. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and clients; respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers, and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

High school or equivalent diploma with three years of experience working in social service agency or five years work experience without a diploma. Higher education in psychology, social work, criminal justice or other related field is a plus. Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimum supervision. Good communication skills are essential, as well as an ability to work with diverse cultures. Computer skills are desirable.

Physical and Working Conditions

Must be able to perform the above essential duties. Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.

Employee Status

Full-time: Normal work hours to be determined by supervisors, however, occasional extending hours and other workdays may be required.
