This person will work in the research laboratory of Dr. Lori Wallrath on the molecular genetic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) models of muscular dystrophy. This person will be responsible for the execution and interpretation of experimental data, presentation of the data at scientific meetings, drafting and editing scientific manuscripts describing research findings, and assisting in the daily operations of the laboratory.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Culture Drosophila melanogaster cultures and perform genetics crosses.

2. Perform a variety of function assays using Drosophila.

3. Perform experiments that involve feeding Drosophila compounds.

4. Perform immunohistochemistry on Drosophila tissues.

5. Teach other laboratory members in molecular biology and genetic techniques as needed.

6. Perform literature searches on relevant topics, prepare research materials for reports, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

7. Present research findings at local conferences.

8. Analyze and interpret data to determine the statistical significance of the results.

9. Keep a detailed laboratory notebooks recording experimental data and analyses and present these findings at weekly lab meetings. Recommend further experiments and/or changes in procedures as needed.




Education Requirements




PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology biochemistry, pharmacology, or related scientific discipline.




Experience Requirements




* Prior postdoctoral experience

* Experience working with Drosophila

* Proficiency using DNA sequence analysis programs (SnapGene)

* Proficiency in the use of computer programs (Acrobat Illustrator, Image J, etc.)

* Experience in light microscopy and image analysis

* Demonstration of excellent written and oral communication skills

* Experience in experimental design

* Strong organizational and record keeping skills




Desired Qualifications




* Knowledge of nuclear envelope proteins and their function

* Experience using Flybase

* Training in pharmacology

* Experience working in the muscle and cardiac field.

This is a ~3-month full-time temporary position from June-August 2025.
