About the Job

The Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization (501c3) housed in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. The mission of MCEE is to equip Minnesotans with the economic and personal financial understanding needed to succeed in today's complex economy. MCEE accomplishes its mission by developing and delivering professional development courses and workshops for K-12 teachers, providing direct programs to K-12 students, and working with community agencies in personal finance education for youth and adults in diverse populations. The incumbent for this position will serve as the executive director for MCEE and will contribute to the teaching mission of the Department of Applied Economics in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences as described in the key responsibilities.

This is a 9-month, 100% appointment with guaranteed summer salary and administrative augmentation. The incumbent for this position will be hired into the job class that is most appropriate based on education and experience, either 9401T or 9402T.

Key Responsibilities

University Teaching - Applied Economics (APEC) (41%)

  • Teach one to two semester-length courses yearly (4 - 7 credits or 6 credits on average) in the Department of Applied Economics, as assigned by the Department Head. Teaching will normally include at least one introductory course each year. The extent of teaching load is negotiable and can vary over time as conditions warrant.
  • Serve as a member of the Undergraduate Committee of the Department of Applied Economics.

Executive Director of the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) (59%)

  • Management: Direct all operations of the organization, including K-12 education and community outreach, development and fundraising, financial management and reporting, communications and marketing, supervision of Council staff, and governance and Board relations.
  • Oversight: Ensure that all MCEE programming and curriculum aligns with state academic standards and MN teacher licensing and/or credit for professional development requirements, and that all MCEE programming and activities comply with UMN policies.
  • Collaboration: Represent MCEE to key audiences and manage key relationships with the K-12 community, the funding community, government agencies and other non-profit organizations. Leverage collaborative relationships with other organizations within the University of MN, across Minnesota and nationally, to allow for the fulfillment of mission and goals.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in economics, applied economics, finance or economic education.
  • At least eight years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience managing a unit or department with complex operational functions.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of high quality written and oral communication skills for professional and nonprofessional audiences, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience in economics, finance, economic or financial literacy education, or related fields.
  • Experience in managing an educational non-profit or education programming.
  • Experience in managing at K-12 teacher professional development organization or K-12 professional development programming.
  • Experience in working with the K-12 educational system.
  • Research experience related to equity and inclusion in economics or financial education.
  • Experience in grant writing and/or fundraising.
  • A record of external funding
  • Experience with the development and use of web, social media, and distance education for educational purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing multiple projects at the same time, meeting deadlines and achieving results.
  • Evidence of working effectively with culturally diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and management skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience.

The incumbent is a full-fledged member of the University of Minnesota (entitled to its benefits and subject to its rules). Within the university's job classification system, this is a Term Faculty position with an initial term of 3-5 years depending on qualifications and experience. After this initial term, the position is annually renewable, subject to performance evaluations and adequate funding. The department head evaluates the incumbent's performance in collaboration with the MCEE Board of Director's Chair and Executive Committee.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: For 9401T $95,000 - $115,000 or for 9402T $75,000 - $90,000, in addition to base salary, the successful applicant will receive nine weeks of summary salary annually and a 10% Executive Director augmentation implying 12-month salary range of: $129,000 - $156,000 annually for 9401T or $102,000 - $122,000 annually for 9402T; depending on education/qualifications/experience
