Primary Purpose of Position
The Coordinator of Fitness Programs provides leadership, supervision, and administrative oversight to fitness programs and special events. This role assists in the management of a comprehensive group fitness programs and personal training services that are available to students, faculty, staff, and other members. The Coordinator assists in the oversight of other fitness and department events, such as RecFest and the 49er Gold Rush 5K. The Coordinator assists in daily operations and supports student employees within facility operations.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from a four year college or university and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Job Duties
University Recreation ( UREC) is an integral part of the Health & Wellbeing Unit within Student Affairs. UREC includes facilities, programs, and services designed to empower members of the UNC Charlotte community, with a particular focus on students, to be physically active and develop lifelong health and wellbeing behaviors. The department includes two indoor recreation centers, two field complexes, an outdoor fitness park, sport programs, and fitness programs. UREC also provides an exceptional employment experience to more than 250 students that intentionally seeks to develop essential career readiness skills.
The Coordinator of Fitness Programs provides leadership, supervision, and administrative oversight to fitness programs and special events. This role assists in the management of a comprehensive group fitness programs and personal training services that are available to students, faculty, staff, and other members. Other Work Responsibilities
Program Management (40%)

  • Manage daily operations of the personal training and small group training program
  • Assist in daily operations of the group fitness program
  • Ensure all programs operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized safety practices
  • Assist with managing associated program equipment (not including fitness center equipment), including maintenance and replacement as necessary
  • Collaborate with the Outreach & Engagement team to develop and execute strategic marketing initiatives, ensuring increased visibility and participation in fitness programs
  • Assist in the maintenance of fitness programs pages on the UREC website
  • Maintain accurate usage data and regularly assess fitness programs to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards and best practices
  • Support the development, oversight, and analysis of budgets, including expenditures, fees, and other revenue
  • Instruct fitness classes or work with personal training clients, as necessary


Supervision (20%)

  • Supervise personal trainers and small group trainers
  • Facilitate student employee trainings and meetings that ensure job responsibilities are able to met, as well as the development of leadership and other career readiness skills
  • Develop and facilitate, when necessary, certification preparation training programs for perspective trainers and instructors
  • Provide support, guidance, and indirect supervision of student employees supervised by the Assistant Director of Fitness Programs

Department Leadership and Administration (10%)

  • Actively participate as a member of the UREC professional staff team, including professional staff team meetings and assigned department committees
  • Ensure that the UREC mission is achieved and values are upheld
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of department strategic plans and annual goals/priorities
  • Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to advance physical activity and holistic wellbeing

General Administration (10%)

  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and trainings
  • Serve on Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte committees and working groups as assigned
  • Actively participate in NIRSA and/or other relevant professional associations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Fitness Programs

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, sport management, kinesiology, or a related field


Necessary Certifications/Licenses

  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
  • Hold one or more of the following certifications: ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), ACE (American Council on Exercise), AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of America), and/or CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) with a focus on Group Fitness, Personal Training, Strength, or Cardiovascular Training

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience administering group fitness and/or personal training programs
  • Experience facilitating trainings and/or certification preparation programs for group fitness instructors and/or personal trainers
  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Preferred Certifications/Licenses

  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED instructor certification
  • Hold more than one of the following certifications: ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), ACE (American Council on Exercise), AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of America), and/or CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) with a focus on Group Fitness, Personal Training, Strength, or Cardiovascular Training
