ELEVATOR INSPECTOR

Department of Buildings

Division of Technical Inspections

(Code Compliance)

Number of Positions: 2

(Additional vacancies are possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $13,228.80/Monthly

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with INTERNATIONAL UNION OF ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTORS, LOCAL 2 (BARGAINING UNIT #43).

Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, reviews building plans/elevator specifications and inspects moving conveyance systems to ensure installations and modifications are in compliance with elevator provisions and safety requirements of the municipal building code, and performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties:



  • Reviews plans and construction specifications for elevators, escalators, and other moving conveyance systems submitted with building permit applications for compliance with the municipal building code
  • Identifies materials and installation methods that are not in compliance with the municipal building code, explains code requirements, and recommends changes to bring plans into compliance
  • Conducts field inspections to ensure that the installation and repair of elevators adhere to approved permit plans and construction specifications
  • Ensures that proper materials and equipment are being used for elevator installation and that the elevator unit is connected and operating properly
  • Conducts annual elevator inspections
  • Inspects mechanical devices (e.g., amusement rides, lifts) to ensure proper operation and safety
  • Prepare reports documenting inspection findings and enter into City proprietary database
  • Interprets and explains elevator provisions of the building code and code violations to engineers, architects, and contractors
  • Issues citations for elevator code violations found during inspections
  • Conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that repairs have been made and that code violations have been corrected
  • Testifies at administrative hearings regarding elevator violations identified during inspections and corresponding citations issued
  • Prepares work reports on inspection activities
  • Inspects job sites for proper building permits and certificates of inspection


Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2045 W. Washington

Chicago, IL 60612

Shift: Monday-Friday

Hours: 7:00am-3:30pm or 8:00am-4:30pm

(Shift may vary due to the needs of the operation)

*Must be willing and able to climb ladders and stairs, enter and work in buildings which are in a state of great disrepair, in all weather conditions and in all neighborhoods throughout the City*.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered elevator construction mechanic apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

* A valid State of Illinois Driver's license is required

* Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

  • Work performed above or below ground level
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites)

Selection Requirements: This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed bidders possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. The interviewed external candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Desired Skills



  • A Quality Elevator Inspector (QEI) Certification
  • Journey level experience with inspection of elevators, escalators and other moving conveyance systems
  • Journey level experience with installation, repair, or maintenance of elevators, escalators and other moving conveyance systems.
  • Ability to navigate logging into various software applications, loading and uploading files
