Are you ready to make your mark? If you're a Film Coating Scientist/Engineer, we have an exciting opportunity for you. The Film Coating Scientist/Engineer reports to Engineering Leadership and whose focus is performing independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of engineering analysis tasks. This position works under a moderate to low level of supervision. Independent technical decisions on work are covered by precedents; this position seeks direction/guidance on novel or controversial problems. In addition, this position may participate in project-specific relationship building with Customers, Suppliers, individuals or organizations.
What You Will Be Doing
- Operates and maintains Physical Vapor Deposition systems, including high/ultra-high vacuum systems, pumping techniques (dry, mechanical, cryo, turbo-molecular, ion), and gas flow control. Troubleshoots system issues, including leak detection, shielding, and process limitations. Manages preventive maintenance, PLC & HMI process control, and ensures system reliability and uptime
- Develops and applies advanced PVD techniques, including sputtering, evaporation, cathodic arc, PECVD, HIPIMS, pulsed laser deposition, and hybrid methods. Designs and optimizes thin film coatings (e.g., wear-resistant nitrides, lubricious coatings) with a focus on thickness, adhesion, stress mitigation, and multilayer/nanolayer architectures. Implements fixturing strategies for line-of-sight deposition and utilizes in-situ measurement tools like quartz crystal microbalances.
- Prepares and cleans substrates (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) using degreasing, blasting, ultrasonic cleaning, and other techniques. Ensures cleanliness through validation methods such as contact angle measurement and spectroscopy. Interprets drawings to identify critical, masking, and optional zones for substrate preparation.
- Conducts thickness measurements using profilometry, XRF, and calot testing, and evaluates adhesion via scratch, tensile, and Rockwell/Mercedes methods. Performs advanced coating analysis using SEM/EDS, XPS, AES, XRD, and GDOES. Tests tribological properties such as wear, friction, abrasion, impact, and hardness using nano-indentation and Vickers testing.
- Oversees process documentation (cleaning, coating procedures) and ensures compliance with quality standards. Conducts audits, quality inspections, and production data analysis to identify trends and drive improvements. Collaborates with suppliers and customers to troubleshoot issues and validate processes.
- Develops and validates new coating recipes and processes to enhance performance, quality, and throughput. Identifies and implements reliability improvements, including equipment upgrades and fixturing redesigns. Leads process development initiatives for optimized coatings and increased operational efficiency.
- Modifies, creates and approves work instructions, operating procedures, engineering specifications or processing documents when appropriate.
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) technical/science or International equivalent with additional materials related coursework required (Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy degree preferred).
- 2 - 5 years professional engineering experience or a combination of experience and an advanced degree required.
- Advanced engineering knowledge; complete understanding of component and material function with respect to the issue(s) at hand. Understands manufacturing processes, drawings and geometric tolerances as well as standards. Fully understands a system and its components.
- Solid knowledge of theory behind quantitative measurement techniques, accuracy analyses, instrumentation calibration and/or uncertainty of measurement.
- Effective time management skills. Ability to prioritize based on business needs.
- Able to effectively operate in the project team environment and communicate with customers. Ability to lead teams in the areas of materials and processing, especially regarding special processes. Practicing diplomacy in team environments.
- Strong knowledge of appropriate internal information management systems: WISE, applications, document access creation, familiarity with job relevant documents. Knows where and how to find internal and external specifications, the appropriate way to handle supercessions.
