The Facilities Management Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Campus Service Worker - Sanitation Helper. About the Opportunity: As a Campus Service Worker - Sanitation Helper, you will provide a variety of support services for Faculty, Staff, and all academic functions and special events throughout the WVU campus, regional campuses, and throughout the state. Under the direction of the Supervisor and/or CSW Lead, the Campus Service Worker - Sanitation Helper will assist with sanitation and recycling services on truck routes and provide support for Labor team job functions. What you'll do:
- Assist truck drivers in daily sanitation and recycling routes on campus by positioning dumpsters for tipping and serving as a truck spotter.
- May be required to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Maintain and care for sanitation/recycling vehicles and equipment by cleaning trucks cabs and packing units, ensuring dumpsters are clean and functional, painting dumpsters, and replacing casters. Responsible for ensuring dumpster corrals are neat and functional, and areas around dumpsters are kept clean and free from litter and debris.
- Relocate offices and classrooms within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading, and unloading furniture, file cabinets, boxes, etc. onto hand trucks, dollies, and box vans for transportation. May require removing desk components, doors, and shelves to ease in relocations. Move, set-up, rearrange, and erect tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, displays, etc. May assist in the design for special event set-ups. Read floor plans and layouts for concerts, registration, commencement, and other special statewide University affiliated events. Drive box vans, forklifts, front loaders, small dump trucks, and operates lift gates.
- Operate motor vehicles (i.e., car, box van, pick-up truck, forklift, front loader, small dump truck...) to transport people; to deliver/receive surplus for inventory control; to deliver, receive, or remove surplus materials for shops and equipment throughout the campus and community and statewide. Unload and store supplies, rotating stock, and equipment at various job sites.
- Assemble/disassemble furniture, workstations, stages, platforms, tents, portable flooring; hangs banners, signs, and special displays.
- Must be able to provide support to academics, special events for WVU campus community, regional campuses, and throughout the state, which requires flexible hours and mandatory overtime.
- Assist in preparing grounds and ornamental beds for planting and seeding, hauls and spreads topsoil and mixed in fertilizer, peat moss, compost vermiculite, and other additives to condition the soil. Assist in planting ornamentals, flowers, shrubs, and trees as required. Assist with the maintenance and care of institutional grounds by mowing, trimming and edging around trees, flower beds, buildings, and walkways, watering lawns, shrubs, and ornamental gardens during dry periods. Removes weeds from flowers, shrubs, and ground cover as required. Remove and dispose of debris throughout grounds area.
- May assist with the removal of graffiti from walls and sidewalks and performing outside cleaning activities. Operate high-pressure washers and other power equipment to complete these tasks. Operate blowers and walk-behind sweepers to clean and remove debris in maintaining the appearance of institutional grounds.
- Remove snow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots using hand tools, power brooms, and snow blowers. Spread deicers, sand, and limestone chips on all areas as needed. Must be able to respond to emergency situations and events, which include snow removal.
Pay Grade: 7 Hours: M-F 5a-1p
Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- A minimum of zero (0) to six (6) months of directly related experiences
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to perform labor activities (moves, trash removal, etc) and follow safety procedures.
- Ability anchoring and securing heavy loads in a safe manner.
- Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate all related labor supporting equipment.
- Ability to work on ladders at heights over ten feet.
- Physical capability to perform duties of the position including long periods of standing and walking, bending, stooping, and climbing, and lifting of heavy items weighing approximately 100 pounds.
- Ability to rapidly learn and perform basic grounds keeping.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals (i.e cleaning solutions), and variations in indoor temperatures and outside weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
- Knowledge of warehousing functions and inventory functions.
- Ability to work with people in a stressful environment.
- Ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
- Ability to maintain above average work standards.
- Ability to rapidly learn various maintenance tasks while assisting craft persons.
- Ability to operate mechanical lifts as required performing job duties.
- Ability to operate chain hoists, lifts, and any specialized lifting equipment.
- Ability to set-up Winger staging as used for commencement ceremonies.
- Ability to set-up and remove Institutional Advancement tents.
- Ability to be able to operate trucks and equipment with manual transmissions.
- Ability to operate Yale, Hyster, and Clark forklifts.
- Ability to operate mowing equipment on steep slopes.
- Ability to assemble/disassemble various furniture (i.e. desks, work stations, and stages, tents, portable flooring, etc).
- Ability to operate box trucks with platform lift gates.
- Ability to work emergencies, weekends, holidays, and special events.
- Ability to operate tilt bed/roll back trucks.
Physical Effort:
- Physical exertion when lifting 50 lb weights
- Lifting of items weighing up to 100 pounds
- Working on feet for extended periods, daily
- Climbing, stooping, bending, working from ladders, working in confined spaces
