Responsibilities

Admissions Coordinator

Hours: 1pm-9pm Monday-Friday

Weekend Rotation: Every 3rd Weekend (7am-7pm)

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Position Summary:

The Admissions Coordinator serves as the point of contact for the clinical assessment process. Assesses patient needs by phone, collecting data and assigning clinical liaison for field contact, coordinates all aspects of referral/admission processes and complies referral/admissions statistical data. The Admissions Coordinator is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities and acute care activities to ensure individualized, patient centered health/mental health care for all patient populations admitted for hospitalization. The Admissions Coordinator will maintain relationships with ongoing sources of referral to alternate treatment sources when appropriate.

Job Duties:

  • Completes the Admission Assessment on the patient and contacts the appropriate doctor if admission criteria are met.
  • Identifies patient symptoms listed by referral which require medical attention, or patient problems and behavior changes and communicates these to the attending physician.
  • Promotes communication between the unit and admissions department by providing an accurate description of the client presented to admissions.
  • Performs Intake Assessments as assigned with referral of the patient to the appropriate service (inpatient, outpatient, etc.).
  • Explains hospital regulations such as visiting hours, items that can and cannot be brought into facility.
  • Escorts patient or arranges for escort to the patient care unit.
  • Enters patient admitting information into computer and routes printed copy to designated department.
  • Clinician refers and triages patients to other placements as appropriate.
  • Uses effective interpersonal skills when dealing with patients, family members, and co-workers.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

Excellent communication skills, i.e., verbal and written. Ability to prioritize; work well under periods of high stress and pressure. Ability to multi-task and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Demonstrates an understanding of funding entities. Thorough knowledge of psychiatric services provided by the hospital. Ability to work flexible hours. Requires a basic understanding of computers; and accurate data entry skills. Knowledge of insurance contracts and payors. Knowledge of precertification for inpatient hospitalization. Experience gathering and documenting medical and clinical information to assess and staff appropriately with physician. Ability to triage for medical and psychiatric needs. Working knowledge of DSM-V diagnostic criteria, mental status exam, and addiction and recovery. Excellent customer service skills as evidenced by supportive and constructive communication with all contacts including coworkers, patients, visitors, families and referral sources.

Educational Requirements:

Master's Degree in the Clinical/Behavioral Health Field (Counseling, Social Work) OR Registered Nurse (RN)

Experience: 1-3 years of experience preferred in psychiatric health care. Working knowledge of DSM-V diagnostic criteria, mental status exam, and addiction and recovery field.
