How you will make history here...

The Senior Scientist will be responsible for the development of Meals and Sauces (M&S) product designs that meet well defined business propositions. The individual in this role will work with minimal supervision to execute these objectives and must possess an excellent knowledge base of technical principles and experimentation with creative problem-solving skills. This position is specifically on the Prego Product Development team. The position requires partnering with Marketing, CCID, Supply Chain, Quality, Packaging, Engineering, Purchasing, and Operations throughout the development and commercialization process to drive new brand innovation as well as maintain the existing portfolio.

This position will report directly to Senior Manager R&D, Meals and Sauces.

What you will do...

  • 40% - With minimal supervision, develop and manage technical timelines and activities for multiple product development projects, including both innovation and brand maintenance/business continuity. Work with cross functional business partners to define key milestones and specific R&D activities and timing. Lead product development projects from concept to commercialization based on product design criteria and consumer insights. Work with Process R&D and Engineering to define ingredient handling & blending equipment requirements. Lead trials in pilot plant and manufacturing locations, including co-packers, to assess feasibility and define finished product specifications that meet consumers' expectations.
  • 40% - Proactively apply scientific knowledge and/ or technical skills to business continuity issues/ opportunities. Incorporate consumer test results into formulation of prototypes. Develop prototypes which deliver against business objectives, including cost and nutritional targets. Perform analysis, testing, and experiments to develop and/or improve products and processes. Identify and communicate potential product constraints or risks and problem solve for solutions. Lead the preparation of and provide sound technical guidance, proposals, and recommendations.
  • 15% - Work with Marketing and Consumer Insights to identify and build concepts against new products and/or platforms.
  • Demonstrate innovative mindset, command of innovation process, thought leadership, business strategy & creative problem solving. Lead awareness of industry developments and pursue ingredient, product or technology advances for application to new and innovative product initiatives.
  • 5% - Establish and maintain shelf-life studies for assigned projects and lead competitive benchmarking and Mind the Gap studies.
  • Project management & prioritization of projects, balancing multiple project initiatives simultaneously and being flexible to changing directions.
  • The individual must be able to deal with ambiguity, adapt to change and persevere. The role also requires the ability to identify critical path items and risks, and effectively communicate these to both the business team and management.
  • Leverage internal and external expertise in resolving technical challenges.
  • Proficient technical R&D expertise with strong understanding of scale up/manufacturing
  • Projects may include working with co-packers, which will require effective communication skills and the ability to quickly adapt CSC formulas to their equipment/systems.
  • Knowledge of financials and business acumen (P&L's, ingredient costing)
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence decisions within the cross functional team (Marketing, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Process Development and Package Development) and externally with partners (suppliers, co-manufacturers, etc).

What you bring to the table (must have) ...

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or related field with 7 years of experience or Master's degree in Food Science 5 years of experience.
  • Food Science or Culinary experience in Italian cuisine

It would be great to have...

  • Experience in developing and commercializing high and low acid products preferred.
  • Work effectively in team environment; communicate and influence effectively both verbally and in writing with cross-functional teams and R&D management.
  • Comfortable driving decisions, with ability to delegate tasks to contractors, other technologists and/or co-ops as appropriate, and also provide training and feedback as necessary.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, good communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for food science, product development, ingredient technology, and consumers as it relates to innovation for new products, line extensions, and productivity opportunities.
  • Ability to think beyond the R&D function to consider the organization and its purpose holistically.
  • Can determine with guidance the root cause of a problem and execute effectively on solutions.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and persevere on projects with less definition.
  • High level of comfort with an iterative development process and the flexibility to direct and lead in an environment with rapid timelines and priorities
  • Ability to work under conditions of ambiguity, technical problems to be solved and translation of those problems into high quality solutions
  • Drives technical decision making to ensure clarity. Exhibits strong drive with ownership and delivery of results
  • Proficient technical R&D expertise with skills in commercializing shelf stable products/processes in the manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with commercialization of sauces is preferred.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to express highly technical ideas and concepts both in written and verbal format; excellent presentation skills are required.
  • Superior documentation of work results, data, and analysis required.
  • Excellent analytical and risk-based decision-making skills required.
  • Strong technical communication skills, proven record of effectively sharing technical results outside of R&D
  • Project management experience with ability to analyze data, summarize findings, and coordinate cross-functional teamwork.
  • Influence/communicate with internal and external functional partners in a way that fosters collaboration.
  • Skillful in laboratory techniques, hands on prototyping, high speed process and food processing technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality assurance practices in the food industry.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and creativity in product development. Demonstrated business savvy and ability to maintain both a technical depth and business results

Compensation and Benefits:

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between

$109,700-$157,700

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
