https://ualr.edu/bursar/ Summary of Job Duties:The Collections Specialist is responsible for reconciling multiple accounts in the Bursar's Office. This position requires analytical thinking, attention to detail, and organization. They must have exceptional communication, customer service, and reconciliation skills in performing all assigned duties and maintain responsiveness to the needs of external and internal customers through courteous and professional behavior. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in general business, finance, accounting, or a related field;

  • Must have at least two (2) years of experience in accounting, reconciliation, and customer service;

  • Technical experience is required.

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Experience in higher education; not required but preferred;

  • Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills and experience in working in a positive team environment with strong interpersonal and relationship skills;

  • Experience with Banner, Workday, or other higher education applications.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students via phone, in person, and email (including studentaccounts@ualr edu) with questions, issues, and concerns about their accounts;

  • Provide efficient and positive customer service to all students, faculty, and staff;

  • Prepare Statements of Account for students and collection agencies as needed, providing support with the reconciliation of account statements when necessary;

  • Process all tuition discount forms for UA System employees and/or family members;

  • Work with Records and Registration and Financial Aid regarding all consortium courses;

  • Bill and reconcile Clinton School revenue and Foundation scholarships in conjunction with Financial Aid;

  • Manage the collections process, which includes notifying students about collections, processing accounts for collection agencies, maintaining accurate collections records (including bankruptcy cases), collaborating with collection agencies to ensure accurate reporting, and reconciling account balances;

  • Manage debt set-off program and all correspondence, including yearly submission and monthly reconciliation with the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration; notify collection agencies of any debt set-off payments;

  • Create journal vouchers/credit memos to correct accounting errors, incorrect postings, or deposits and ensure proper reconciliation of adjustments;

  • Maintain internal payment plans for students, reconciling posted payments and outstanding balances;

  • Post all debt set-off and collections payments to student accounts, ensuring proper reconciliation with financial records; special accounts (Clinton, Washington Center, Study Abroad) to maintain accurate financial records;, and adjust, reconcile

  • Monitor, reconcile, and adjust special accounts (Clinton, Washington Center, Study Abroad) to maintain accurate financial records;

  • Work extended hours as needed during peak times;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess superior verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills;

  • Must be self-motivated, creative, customer-service-focused, and detail-oriented;

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; strong interpersonal and relationship skills;

  • Knowledge of customer service techniques;

  • Proficiency in the use of information technology applications;

  • Must be organized and able to work on multiple projects at once while staying on track and producing results as scheduled;

  • Ability to comprehend and assimilate technical and business-related documents;

  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and as a team player;

  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with other departments to ensure proper reconciliation of student accounts and financial records;

  • Knowledge of accounting principles, reconciliation processes, and database management;

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies of assigned sections;

  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations while maintaining professionalism;

  • Ability to conduct research, perform basic quantitative quality assurance reviews, reconcile discrepancies, and prepare reports;

  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on accuracy and reconciliation of financial transactions;

  • Ability to apply policies, procedures, and other applicable regulations associated with the assigned department or program;

  • Ability to effectively communicate in person, over the phone, and in writing to all customers while providing excellent customer service.
