Community Educator (Haywood, Buncombe, McDowell County, NC)

LOCATION: Remote - must live in or near Haywood, Buncombe, or McDowell County, North Carolina. This position will cover Western North Carolina. Must be willing to travel as needed.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Community Educator focuses on engaging, collaborating, and supporting the communities Vaya serves through facilitation of educational opportunities and coordinated outreach for those trainings for community stakeholders. The Community Educator also provides trainings required by any of Vaya Health's contracts with NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).

The individual in this role is knowledgeable in NC mental health, developmental disabilities and substance use services systems as well as evidence-based practices and programs for the delivery of those services. The Community Educator is responsible for planning, organizing, and facilitating community education for key community stakeholders. Education modules include, but are not limited to:

  • Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) - assists with and/or coordinates the planning and/or facilitation of a 40-hour curriculum for Law Enforcement and First Responders. CIT programming consists of education, networking, engagement, collaboration, coordination, and the development of community based steering committees.
  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
    • Modules: Adult, Youth, Teen, EMS/Fire, Public Safety, Higher Education, Older Adults, Veterans
  • Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Community Resiliency Model (CRM)
  • GAINS: Trauma Informed Approach to Improve the Criminal Justice System
  • Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) Facilitation
  • Other ad hoc education as requested by the community, including but not limited to; brain and physical health, Darkness to Light, and NC Innovations and Registry of Unmet Needs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Community Education, Engagement and Networking:

  • Assist with the design and development of educational content, curriculum, learning materials, and workshops by utilizing industry standard methodology for assessment, design, development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Practice cultural humility in the development and delivery of all educational materials and presentations
  • Utilize engaging and interactive educational course content (videos, quizzes/polls, simulations, and exercises/activities)
  • Select appropriate instructional methods, define time frames, and prepare educational materials as directed for in-person and on-line formats, or blended learning (as is appropriate for the educational materials and learners)
  • Coordinate and facilitate small and large group educational activities in collaboration with community stakeholders and other Vaya departments
  • Provide established evidence-based education to community stakeholders
  • Administrative responsibilities: schedules training sessions; tracks and confirms registrations and attendance through training trackers and MHFA Connect Learning Portal; coordinates educational venues; prepares sign in sheets, evaluations, and any other needed items for training
  • Pre/Post communication with participants to Collect and review evaluations following each educational event; ensure systematic changes are made to enhance future learning
  • Participate in researching and evaluating new and alternative learning delivery methods
  • Collaborate with other community partners to meet the unique needs of those Vaya serves (i.e.: DSS, NCDHHS, Veteran Services of NC)
  • Attend community stakeholder meetings in support of educational initiatives that may include: Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Steering Committees; Crisis Response Committees; System of Care (SOC) Community Collaboratives; NC CIT State Advisory and sub-committees, Community Mental Health Advisory committees

Staff Education:

  • Learn and maintain an on-going knowledge base of NC Medicaid Direct and Tailored Plan (TP) requirements
  • Facilitate and/or co-facilitate required NC Medicaid Direct and TP training sessions
  • Collaborate and engage with other departments within Vaya to identify and provide high quality staff professional development opportunities

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Representing Vaya at community events, conferences, governmental events, exhibits, and fairs

QUALIFICATIONS & CREDENTIALING REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a Human Services field (Psychology, Social Work, etc.) or Physical Health field (Public Health or Nursing).

Three years' proven experience delivering learning and development and/or education to adult learners, preferably in a community-based environment. Experience can be combined with a role where education is a component of the applicant's primary duties and responsibilities.

Preferred experience:

  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Preferred licensure/certification:

  • Training Certificate or Virtual Training and Facilitation Certificate preferred
  • Licensure or certification in a related field is preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position requires driving to counties served by Vaya Health. Overnight stay may periodically be required depending upon geographic proximity to respective training locations.
  • Position requires a combination of sedentary work and standing for an extended period of time, this may include facilitating education sessions or arranging venue space. Position requires an ability to lift, push, or pull items up to 20pounds.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: The person in this person must live in North Carolina or within 40 miles of the NC border.


SALARY: Depending on qualifications & experience of candidate. This position is non-exempt and is eligible for overtime compensation.
