Summary

The Mechanical Assembly Shop Lead will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating day-to-day activities of the mechanical assembly shop including personnel training, task assignments, parts tracking, ensuring adherence to quality standards, and meeting production and customer schedule commitments. May be required to occasionally support field installations and lead mechanical and electrical installation teams at site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordination of shop activities and performance

  • Coordinate and direct day to day activities of team in mechanical assembly shop.

  • Keep up with parts status for completion of assemblies, track shortages and anticipated arrival dates. Seek updated parts status when delivery date is not achieved.

  • Monitor and track project schedules and hardware milestones to ensure parts and assemblies are completed on time.

  • Provide weekly briefs to mechanical assembly team on priority work. Report status to managers on shop progress. Coordinates with Operations Project Managers and Production Planning on specific program needs.

  • Monitor budgeted hours against project allocated hours.

  • Able to perform as backup for manager for short periods of time.

  • Assist with providing shop estimates for proposals and upcoming work.

Quality, Workmanship, Safety and Training

  • Analyze and resolve work or quality issues as they arise. Make recommendations on how to achieve zero defects.

  • Verify workmanship per Company and Customer workmanship standards by performing visual inspection of assemblies in conformance to mechanical drawing.

  • Ensure safety awareness and requirements in shop in accordance with applicable Company and Customer safety policies and procedures.

  • Create and maintain training programs and activities. Demonstrate and teach standard practices such cutting, drilling, fitting, riveting, bending, layout, gluing, and an assortment of assembly fastening techniques. Coordinate, assign, and document completion of training tasks and team member proficiency.

  • Create and maintain a Lessons Learned database that describes incidents encountered during the build of assemblies and communicate recurring issues to management.

  • Identify areas for and participate in the implementation of process improvements initiatives.

Maintain Tools, Equipment, and Supplies

  • Maintain and manage floor stock inventory and supplies to support upcoming planned shop activity.

  • Maintain all hand tools required for tasking in serviceable order. Properly retire unserviceable tools and purchase replacements.

  • Ensure tool and gang boxes are kept in accordance with company standards.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 2-year technical degree or equivalent related training; equivalent combination of education and experience in related field.

  • 6+ years' experience in related field.

  • Computer literate-position requires use of integrated office software packages.

  • Knowledge of airframe construction and electrical wiring of trainers.

  • Knowledge of internal and military standards for mechanical and electrical assembly.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety policies, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to solve complex problems.

  • Due to U.S. Government contract requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this role.

Security Responsibilities

Must complywith all company security and data protection / usage policies and procedures. Personally responsible for proper marking and handling of all information and materials, in any form. Shall not divulge any information, or afford access, to other employees not having a need-to-know. Shall not divulge information outside company without management approval. All government and proprietary information will be accessed and stored electronically on company provided resources.

  • Incumbent must be eligible for DoD Personal Security Clearance.

Due to U.S. Government contract requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this role.

Work Environment

  • Able to work in a manufacturing environment that includes hazardous conditions and potential risk to personal safety including chemical, electrical and physical hazards.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours and overtime as needed, including occasional weekends.

  • Some travel may be required to assist with certain projects.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The physical or muscular exertion required for prolonged standing, walking, and lifting or moving objects (weighing as much as 50lbs) and the resulting fatigue brought about by these activities.

  • Work in sustained sitting, standing, stooping, and squatting positions. Also climbing on ladders and equipment to heights 25 to 30 feet above the floor. Ability to safely move and work on equipment in confined spaces for reasonable periods of time.

  • The physical dexterity required in performing tasks that require hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.

  • Have the manual dexterity, knowledge, and experience necessary to work safely and effectively with various hand tools.

  • Must be able to climb stairs to enter and exit a simulator.

  • Ability to see clearly at a close range.
