Job Description Summary:

The Bioengineering Division is seeking a Senior Microfluidics Engineer who thrives in a multidisciplinary environment and enjoys solving unique, challenging problems. At Draper Bioengineering we develop novel technologies at the interface between biology, chemistry, and engineering, with a particular emphasis on leveraging our groundbreaking advances in microfluidic systems for applications ranging from diagnostics to biomolecular synthesis.

Major focus areas include best-in-class automated cellular therapy manufacturing platforms, high-throughput organ-on-chip models with integrated flow and sensors, and highly multiplexed biosensor platforms for diagnostics and threat detection. This opportunity will emphasize skills and experience with microfluidic device design and testing, and will benefit from experience and working knowledge of biochemical, cellular, and molecular analysis techniques.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities
* Drive solutions to complex problems with limited direction.
* Contribute to the development of innovative bioengineering solutions, propose ways forward, and adapt appropriately to changes in requirements.
* Able to provide insight and suggest design modifications based on analysis outcomes.
* Actively mentor less experienced bioengineers and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related fields is required, a PhD is preferred.

Experience
Requires 5-7 years of Bioengineering or related engineering experience.

Additional Job Description:

Additional duties/responsibilities

  • Design, model, fabricate, and characterize microfluidic devices for cell biology, bioprocessing, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering applications.
  • Develop and execute laboratory research plans that support project goals and milestones.
  • Experimental design, assay execution, troubleshooting, and data analysis for studies that involve technologies at the convergence of biology and engineering.
  • Collect, analyze, organize, and effectively present data to internal management, external customers, and/or for publication.
  • Lead teams of engineers in development of new devices and technologies.
  • Assist with development of internal capabilities by providing technical expertise.
  • Support business development efforts through ideation, proposal writing, and customer outreach as needed.
  • Complete all necessary training, adhere to all laboratory, institutional, and government regulations, and contribute to an environment of safety and compliance.
  • The position will require significant time spent on hands-on laboratory work, but will also include coordination and supervision of lab staff and resources.

Preferred qualifications

  • Expertise in microfabrication techniques and technologies, including experience in microfluidic device design, fabrication and testing is required.
  • Knowledge of planning and execution of tissue culture, molecular and cellular assays, such as qPCR and flow cytometry, and/or biochemistry is highly desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
