Duties/Responsibilities*:



  • Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
  • Set up the planer to process boards and dimension lumber to attain a smooth surface and a uniform size.
  • Frequently monitor lumber for size, skip, and/or other manufacturing defects and immediately resolve for maximum production.
  • Complete changeovers quickly with ease and accuracy.
  • Sharpen jointer and planer knives prior to runs to reduce downtime.
  • Change top, bottom, and side heads and knives as needed.
  • Apply knowledge of lumber's cut, amount, size, and grade.
  • Perform startup and shutdown equipment inspections.
  • Clean and maintain working area and equipment.
  • Complete preventative maintenance
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.
  • If lead status is awarded, the individual will act as a functional expert and serve as a point of contact in the area of responsibility; assist the supervisor with daily reports and crew member assignments; provide breaks; and provide training. Additionally, based on the needs of the department/supervisor, leads may be required to maintain inventory levels and coordinate work with vendors and contractors.


Position Requirements: Must meet position requirements to be considered a candidate for this position.



  • Two (2) years of previous experience operating a planer, including knowledge of machine set up, knife changing, operation, and clearing break-ups.
  • Millwright and preventative maintenance knowledge.
  • Competent welding skills
  • Ability to accurately measure lumber and familiarity with lumber size.
  • Ability to work variable hours depending on the needs of the facility.
  • Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.


Environmental Conditions:

May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and extreme temperatures.

Required Personal Protective Equipment:

Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include high visibility garments, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
