Seasonal part-time, approximately 16 weeks

The starting salary for new staff members is determined by considering the salary range assigned to the position and by reviewing the candidate's qualifications for the job as compared with job responsibilities. Prior work experience should be considered in determining the salary offer, provided that it is relevant to the job. Additional factors such as secondary language proficiency or advanced degrees that enhance performance may also be considered. A candidate's salary may exceed the minimum amount based on factors such as experience, additional skills (e.g., secondary language proficiency), or pertinent degrees that enhance the individual's contribution to the role but are not required. Opportunities for increased compensation are provided through referral bonuses, shift differentials, Thank You Pay, promotions, and periodic pay increases based on the Garden's overall performance and financial budgets.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Exhibition Facilitator ensures an exceptional visitor experience by actively engaging with the public and fostering positive interactions within the Butterflies and Blooms exhibition. There are up to eight positions open for this seasonal, part-time role. Hours will vary, with schedule from 1 to 8 p.m. or 5 to 8 p.m. to cover weekdays and weekends.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Work with exhibition facilitator to ensure a full daily roster of volunteers and work with staff to fill vacancies.
  • Interact with visitors and volunteers by answering questions and facilitating tours and programs as needed.
  • Gain subject matter competency related to the exhibition.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers to create an outstanding visitor experience.
  • Communicate daily with horticulture staff to learn about plants, arrival of pupae, and changes within the exhibition.
  • Report any operational problems to appropriate staff.
  • Participate in volunteer training.
  • Attend appropriate meetings as needed.
  • Assist with other programs and projects as needed in the Visitor Events & Programs department.

Qualifications
Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • At least one year of experience in customer service, public engagement, or education- or equivalent education
  • Candidate should be available to work from mid-May through mid-September.
  • Available to work weekend and evening shifts.
  • A high energy level and passion for working with the public.
  • Excellent organizational, and communication skills.
  • An enthusiastic interest in working with volunteers.
  • The ideal candidate will be flexible, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.

Physical Demands:

Position requires extensive periods of walking and standing with lifting/pushing up to approximately 20 pounds. Most of the work is conducted outside, rain or shine. Candidate must be comfortable working outside in all types of weather including hot summer days and cool rainy days.
