Director, Product Development R&D Pharmacy Automation

As a pillar of our Medication Management Solutions (MMS) business, the Pharmacy Automation platform positions BD to offer our pharmacy customers a more comprehensive set of smart, connected care technologies as they expand care to new settings, centralize their pharmacy operations and lead the charge in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing the industry. The Pharmacy Automation portfolio covers a wide range of hardware and software technologies, including storage and dispensing robots, vision solutions, pouch and blister card packagers, vial filling systems, central fill solutions, and enterprise pharmacy management software solutions.

The Pharmacy Automation team is looking for a technical product development leader, responsible for owning a key platform within the business, driving execution across programs within the platform, and fostering a customer-centric culture of innovation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the product development strategy of one of the three portfolios within the Pharmacy Automation platform, aligning development goals and achievements to key business needs.
  • Translate R&D strategy to implement end-to-end product development across a complex portfolio, collaborating with hardware, software and systems leaders to staff key projects and deliver against R&D commitments.
  • Be the voice of R&D in the multi-functional development teams, collaborating across Commercial, Regulatory, Quality, Medical Affairs, and Operations functions to 1) define technical product strategy and technology roadmaps, 2) ensuring cross-functional deliverables are considered and incorporated, and 3) identify and communicate trade-offs across projects.
  • Provide strong technical leadership to key product development owners on all aspects of the R&D portfolio.
  • Identify key technical competencies and capabilities required within the platform to deliver new product development and sustaining engineering commitments.
  • Recruit, mentor, and upskill R&D talent across the business, using BD-wide recognition programs to highlight RxAuto talent and achievements.
  • Identify and implement industry best-in-class R&D tools, processes & standards across the platform.
  • Drive a customer-focused culture across the R&D organization to monitor industry trends, communicate market shifts, and adapt to new requirements.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience with at least 5 years of applicable managerial experience in R&D management at a suitable leadership level with strong people development and delegation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience aligning business goals to technical strategy, including capability assessments, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding of full life-cycle product development, including experience with milestone planning and project management methodologies. Medical device development experience is desirable.
  • Leadership experience in a complex development environment in partnership with a matrixed organization and external technical suppliers. Excellent multi-functional communication skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to bring clarity to ambiguous areas to drive decisions.
  • Strong business acuity and demonstrated capability of managing internal and external customer expectations.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplined engineering teams that consist of hardware, software, and systems engineers. Experience developing technical talent with customer-focused mentalities and behaviors.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10-20% (domestic and international).
