Overview

Department 451 (D451) Test Engieer is an integral part of Electric Boat's New Construction business. With this business, Electric Boat provides mission-ready submarines to the fleet through construction, test, and post-shakedown deck-plate support. D451 engineers provide engineering support for work activities on submarines, including the planning, execution, and certification of work.

D451 consists of five distinct groups that supports the construction of submarines for the US Navy:

    Reactor Plant Electrical
  1. Non-Propulsion Electrical Engineering
  2. Propulsion Plant Electrical Engineering
  3. Instrumentation, Design & Test
  4. Facilities Engineering Support

D451 Engineering operates in a collaborative, dynamic, team-oriented manner. Using a design-build approach, D451 interfaces with Operations, Design, Planning Yard, Test, and Program Office personnel in order to arrive at innovative solutions to difficult problems. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy (USN) customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton (SOSG), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), subcontractors, and submarine crews.

D451 Engineering supports submarine construction work locally and at off site locations including Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Newport News, Virginia, as well as Naval Submarine Base New London. Strong written and verbal communication skills are utilized and fostered. A hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven engineering approach is the norm. Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, USN maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training. D451's facility engineering support organization also works with local code requirements to support the submarine construction program.

Typical work assignments of the D451 engineering electrician include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design of test equipment, including temporary power distribution to shipboard applications.
  • Evaluate existing shipyard facilities and recommendations for improvements to safety, reliability, and functionality.
  • Review and comment on drawings and specification documents for new electrical installations throughout the shipyard.
  • Support operations and maintenance of EB's floating assets.

Travel, evening, weekend and overtime work are sometimes required based on department needs.

Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home. This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables. Please ask for more details on how it applies to this opening during discussions with the department.
