Description

The Research Assistant I will support the laboratory of Dr. Eiman Azim where they will focus on assisting the lab manager with mouse colony maintenance in support of the Principal Investigator (PI) and lab research goals. Colony maintenance includes breeding, weaning, handling, and coordinating with lab members with their experimental animal needs. Other duties include assisting with general tissue processing (e.g. perfusions, histology, immunohistochemistry) and making general lab solutions as well as assisting on animal behavior experiments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be



  • Assists with mouse colony management (handling, breeding, weaning, record-keeping).
  • Tissue collection for genotyping.
  • Conduct histology procedures, including:

    • Perfusions
    • Precise sectioning of mouse brain using a microtome or cryostat
    • Utilizing immunocytochemical staining and advanced microscopy techniques


  • Assisting lab researchers with mouse behavior experiments.
  • Work is performed under direct supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.


What we Require



  • No professional experience is required with a relevant degree.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline required. A minimum of 2 years of experience in a scientific role is required for consideration of a Bachelor's degree in a different discipline.
  • Computer skills required: (Select all applicable): Microsoft Office, Google Drive
  • Other skills (preferred):

    • Prior experience or internships in a laboratory setting.
    • Prior experience with stereotaxic surgery on mice and/or histology procedures is highly desirable.
    • Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety practices.
    • Demonstrated ability with fine dexterous tasks, such as dissections, thread work, and soldering small components.
    • Knowledge of relevant regulations and compliance standards.

    The expected pay range for this position is $18.03 to $21.00 hourly. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
