About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join Boston Scientific as a Senior Manager of Research & Development responsible for development of future WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) implant devices, within our Cardiology group. In our WATCHMAN business, we're committed to advancing stroke prevention therapy through a one-time, minimally invasive procedure that permanently reduces stroke risk for people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. This role is integral as we build a differentiated portfolio to strengthen WATCHMAN's leadership position in the LAAC space, drive further adoption in this area, and help more patients throughout the world with this therapy.

The candidate selected for this position will oversee a group of technical experts (engineers, scientists, and/or technicians) dedicated to exploratory and new product development efforts to commercialize future LAAC solutions. This role involves leading a high-performing team to drive innovation and technical decision making, while recruiting and retaining top talent. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building trust with both direct reports and cross-functional peers and experience in both people and technical leadership.

Work Mode:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be in our Maple Grove, MN office at least four days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:



  • Recruit, coach, and develop engineering talent to meet immediate business needs, while creating a bench strength of technical expertise and leadership.
  • Set performance expectations and ensure a culture of high-performance, collaboration and winning spirit. Be a champion of diversity, equity inclusion, and belonging.
  • Empower and support teams in problem-solving, in pursuit of efficient technical decisions.
  • Create an entrepreneurial, action-based culture with a passion for winning.
  • Assess implant-based project team needs and work with technical leads and program managers to ensure they are set up for technology and product development success.
  • Challenge and support teams to execute to an accelerated Product Life Cycle Process for all LAAC Implant projects, with a strong focus on agile development and commercializing in a timeframe that is competitive.
  • Provide direction and/or guidance to team members who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments. May also supervise non-exempt employees and external contract design firm employees.
  • Build strategic partnerships across Boston Scientific to further departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Support the cross-functional team through project specific budget cycles, which may include monitoring, developing, and adjusting spend as needed to support business objectives.
  • Keep the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and action.
  • Support and reinforce the divisional and corporate quality system.



Required qualifications:



  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of engineering work experience (preferably in medical device or related field) with Bachelor's degree, 8+ years of engineering experience with a Master's degree, or 6+ yrs experience with a PhD degree.
  • 3+ years' experience in leading and developing a technical engineering group.
  • A proven track record developing medical devices from early stage through full product launch and sustaining.
  • Proficient in design controls and risk management practices with fluency in what external regulations require for various product approvals.
  • Demonstrated strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project/taskmanagement enabling highly effective teams.
  • Proven ability to transparently and concisely communicate technical issues and risks across all levels of the organization



Preferred qualifications:



  • Engineering experience in implantable device development.
  • Cross functional experience in working with external manufacturing partners, operations, test engineering and process development.
  • Passion for understanding and solving complex problems from our physician customers, including ability to learn the clinical disease state and identifying unmet needs.
  • Previous experience in engaging with physician customers including giving technical presentations.
  • Highly creative problem solver who leads with a sense of urgency.
  • Personal drive, individual accountability and a strong bias for action.
  • Passionate about creating an environment that fosters curiosity, continuous improvement, learning, accountability, knowledge sharing, problem solving, speaking candidly, and creates a safe environment for people to challenge.

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) - see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
