Staff Accountant II - Multifamily Property Tax

Job Summary

The Staff Accountant II - Property Tax, plays a crucial part in managing and overseeing property tax-related activities for our diverse portfolio of multifamily housing properties. The position requires a detail-oriented and organized individual who can handle high-volume tasks and collaborate effectively with various teams.

The individual in this role will be responsible for assisting with property tax assessments, reviews, appeals, and budget preparations. This position involves working closely with property accountants and other departments to ensure accurate and timely property tax filings and payments. Additionally, the role will participate in efficiency initiatives to streamline property tax processes and improve overall productivity.

Location: With a hybrid work setup, applicants should reside within commuting distance of our corporate office in the Sorrento Valley area of San Diego, CA.

Reports to: Controller / Director of Property Tax

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting up new properties, including initial property tax assessments and documentation.

  • Conduct monthly review and validation of data and documents for property tax values, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local regulations.

  • Perform monthly review and validation of data and documents for property tax bills, identifying discrepancies and resolving issues promptly.

  • Assist with property tax appeals and tax models, including gathering necessary documentation and supporting evidence.

  • Collaborate with property accountants on property tax accruals, ensuring accurate and timely entries.

  • Assist with the preparation and analysis of the property tax budget, providing insights and recommendations for cost-saving opportunities.

  • Prepare and file personal property tax returns, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Maintain detailed records of all property tax-related activities, including correspondence, filings, and payments.

  • Stay updated on changes in property tax laws and regulations and communicate relevant updates to the team.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Controller / Director of Property Tax.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting is preferred but not required

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in accounting

  • Focus on property management accounting and/or property tax is preferred.

  • Experience in the real estate industry is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with real and personal property tax processes and regulations.

  • Experience with property tax software such as Yardi, Timberline, or Itamlink is a plus.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, high-volume team environment.

  • Must be detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and highly organized.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external business associates to promote positive professional working relationships and environments.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.

Estimated Rate of Pay:

$75,000.00 - $85,000.00

This position is exempt; the range above reflects annual base salary.

The pay range displayed for this position is determined by skills and experience required, location and job complexity*. Potential job offers may vary based on the skills, education, and experience an individual candidate holds. This range reflects base rate only, and does not include allowances, perks, commissions or bonuses applicable to this position (if any). In addition to base salary, Fairfield offers all full time associates the following, upon meeting eligibility requirements:

* Pay range is a calculation based on a midpoint price. Fairfield complies with all wage and hour laws, including minimum wage and salary exempt requirements.
