ABOUT THE POSITION

Transportation Engineer/Planner - Analysis | Richmond, VA; Virginia Beach, VA

VHB is seeking a passionate and innovative Transportation Engineer or Planner to join our dynamic Transportation Team in Virginia. In this role, you'll play a pivotal role in transforming urban and rural transportation infrastructure to enhance mobility and safety across communities. You'll have the opportunity to support corridor studies, perform traffic engineering analysis, identify safety improvements, and contribute to key infrastructure projects that improve community mobility. Key Responsibilities:

    Collaborate with a team of experts to develop cutting-edge transportation engineering and planning solutions for multimodal projects.
  • Conduct detailed traffic engineering analyses, including forecasting, modeling, and evaluating traffic operations and safety measures.
  • Lead safety and operational analysis tasks at various scales, from local intersections to regional networks.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret traffic data to inform strategic planning and design decisions.
  • Compile and prepare detailed reports and planning documents, utilizing your strong communication skills to effectively convey findings to stakeholders.
  • Conduct research on transportation trends, community demographics, and statistical data to support project objectives.
  • Perform safety-related projects (Roadway Safety Audits, Safe Streets for All, etc.)
  • Help develop policies and programs for Virginia's transportation system.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Enthusiastic learner with a proactive approach to problem-solving and project management.
  • Proficiency in several traffic engineering software systems, such as Synchro/SimTraffic, SIDRA, HCS, MicroStation/AutoCAD, Vissim, and GIS.
  • Proficiency with national and local transportation standards (e.g., VDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual, ITE guidance).
  • Strong understanding of traffic design principles, signal timing, highway safety, and active transportation operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of traffic safety principles.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field.
  • Background in transportation operations, safety, and multimodal engineering or planning.
  • 3- 5 years of relevant experience in transportation engineering, planning or related fields required; 5 - 8 years preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer license or AICP certification preferred.
