Albany Engineered Composites (AEC) designs, develops, and manufactures advanced composite components in order to help our customers push the frontiers of innovation. Our core strength is our ability to produce highly tailored, complex composite components. With our unique blend of products - including 3D woven structures, traditional and non-traditional 2D composite structures, and discrete through thickness reinforcement technologies, to name a few - AEC is able to produce composite components and products which meet performance and cost specifications often beyond the reach of metallic or conventional laminated composites. Our composite design and fabrication expertise can be found on many commercial platforms such as Boeing's 7-series family, the Airbus A380 aircraft as well as Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. For defense programs,AEC provides a wide range of products including complete structural assemblies, flight critical components, primary and secondary structural elements for platforms such as the F-35 Lightning II, the CH-53K Heavy-lift Helicopter and the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM).
AEC is committed to delivering high-quality, economical composite solutions to our customers. Significant investment in infrastructure and automation ensuresAEC is positioned to maximize that value, offering the right processes to meet our customer's needs. Key Duties/Responsibilities: A Mfg. Engineering Technician serves an important technical and manufacturing role and acts as a liaison between engineering and production. Through the life cycle of a new part or for a mature production line, the engineering technician may:
- Assist the engineer to develop or improve manufacturing methods and processes in the production of conforming parts and assemblies.
- Work closely with engineering, manufacturing and quality to develop and implement the tooling and process methods and/or changes generated by the engineer. Translating the concept into a highly producible product by meeting internal and external qualification criteria for identified key product requirements and specifications.
- Support the preparation of development and production documentation, including work instructions, travelers, and any manufacturing process aids.
- Review product made with engineering, manufacturing and quality to verify conformity and, when the product is non-conforming, assist in determining root cause and corrective action.
- Assist in the setting up, commissioning, and approval of production equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
- Support training of production personnel in the correct methods of manufacture, once the processes are defined and documented.
Position Competencies:* Knowledge and Skills: A Mfg. Engineering Technician is expected to have completed an Associate of Science (AS) degree in an Engineering Technology or have at least 5 years of direct experience in the composites industry, ideally in aerospace-related applications. A Mfg. Engineering Technician candidate shall be able to demonstrate the highest level of competence in many of the following areas:
- Autoclave and out-of-autoclave processing of prepreg components.
- RTM and VARTM processing.
- Machining, bonding and finishing of cured composite parts.
- Expertise in at least one of the composite technician disciplines (RTM, VARTM, Dry Lay-up, Wet Lay-up, Prepreg Lay-up, Braiding, Winding, & Paint/Finishing.)
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft software (MSWord, PowerPoint, Excel) to enable the creation of work instruction and other production documentation.
- Understand and interpret engineering drawings, with a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Proficient in the use of all manual metrology instruments: such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, scales, etc.
- Working knowledge of lean tools such as 5S, Visual Factory, value stream mapping.
- Understanding of the company quality system.
- Knowledge of tooling, fixturing and composite processing equipment.
- The ability to train staff in best practices and implement lessons learned across multiple programs
The following preferred skills and abilities shall be demonstrated by a Mfg. Engineering Technician candidate:
- Team and people skills that are required to ensure efficient execution of tasks.
- Self-motivated with a propensity to always stay busy.
- Problem solving skills.
- Flexible and adaptable.
- Effective as a communicator and integrator with the ability to understand technical documents and drawings and then clearly relay the intent to operator technicians.
- Well organized and disciplined.
- Able to identify problems and willing to make decisions to resolve them.
- Able to maintain proper balance in the use of their time and hold themselves accountable for meeting due dates on time and within budget.
